48,000 Possible Felons May Not Be Able To Vote
Here we go again - possible felons??? What the hell is a possible felon? (Sigh)

<snip>
The state of Florida has identified some 47,687 voters as suspected felons who may be ineligible to vote.

However, it is hard to say who's on the list because it is difficult for anyone to see it.

Civl liberties groups and open records advocates want to know why the list is being kept so secret -- especially considering what happened in 2000 when perhaps thousands of legitimate voters were wrongly struck from the voting rolls.

The state acknowledges the list is a public record but it won't allow for anything more than a quick inspection of the list, without any note-taking or photocopying.

Unbelievable!!!

2. Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush purged over 100,000 voters...
...from the voter roles in 2000 using the same tactic. Anyone who had a name that matched or nearly matched names of known felons or suspected felons that they had from police, prison and wanted files were flagged. When people showed up on election day to vote and their names were flagged, they were turned away and could not vote. This happened primarily in democratic dominated precincts. The bastards are doing it again!

4. God dammit here we go again!!!!
This cannot be allowed to happen again! And people need to understand that filing lawsuits and holding candlelight vigils while singing "Kum by Yah" is not going to cut it. I think it's high time for civil rights groups be prepared to return to their roots and be prepared for some election day civil disobedience.

So help me God if some paper pushing government bureaucrat told me at the polls that I could not vote because I was a "felon" (when I am not) then there would be hell to pay. I consider the governmental disenfranchisement of voters to be an act of violence against the people.

6. Florida
IS a banana republic. This is completely fucked up.

"Possible felons"? Names that matched? Nevermind the ethical question of not allowing real felons the right to vote in the first place...but people that just happen to have the same names?

This is extremely creepy.
