Nonviolent protesters occupy Univ. of Hawaii administration building
From Kyle:
Aloha Kakou

Around 50-60 people invaded the offices at 10 am. The students and
faculty were successful in taking over the President's office. President McClain said that he hadn't made up his mind yet but that he would wait until he got a report back from the Chancellor. We told him that we would remain until he cancelled the UARC. He left for another meeting and told us that we could stay "as long as we wanted."

At one point, the group was able to get into the inner sanctum of his
office. Now fifty students and faculty were occupying the entire
office. His staff nervously shuffled sensitive documents out of the
room and tried to keep us out of his chair.

At 2:30 pm the UH Manoa chancellor's office did a press conference, and a group of activists showed up with signs.

Around 4:45 pm it was getting more tense as security started massing.
The building closes at 5 pm. Two plain clothes police showed up. There was a SWAT team outside. They got the order to back off since we had permission to be there. Then Administration gave the word that we could stay. So we started busting out sleeping bags and ordered out for pizza.

We hoisted the Hawaiian flag up on the flag pole. Now we're setting up tents on the lawn.

We'll be here for the night.

That's all for now. Check out the website for more info:

1. Keep us posted!
You have a right to demand that your university is free of secret military research. The Pentagon has so much already. Why do they have to invade Hawaii's university?

2. Check out the link too, streaming...

We built this cool place with state tax dollars, and an innovation center which is an incubator for new jobs, which will be converted to secret research. INSTEAD of the expressed intention when we devoted the land and money to build it.
It is just the shits.
I am considering cross posting, I know it's a bad thing to do but there is just about nobody ever in the Hawaii forum. (Huuuuu-i! anybody home?)
Thank you for your insights!

7. Navy: Next move up to university
Associated Press

HONOLULU — The Navy says it is not pushing the University of Hawaii to accept a bitterly contested proposal to open a Navy-affiliated research center on campus.

“The contract would not be awarded until approved by the Board of Regents for the University of Hawaii,” officials with Naval Sea Systems Command said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The Navy is not currently in negotiations with any other U.S. university to establish a University Affiliated Research Center, but its five-year, $50 million offer to establish one at the Manoa campus won’t last forever.

University students and faculty, along with community members, protested the proposed military research center with a weeklong sit-in at interim president David McClain’s office, which ended peacefully last Wednesday. <snip>
