just wanted tell a little story about a friend in galena, since your thread seems to be pretty buoyant. my friend charlie fach, an artist and the owner of stonehouse pottery, and abe's spring street guest house, is now an alderman in galena. i have not known charlie that long, but we became fast friends in our hatred of all that is happening to our country. he has been quite exasperated with the attitude out there, and the difficulty of organizing people. hence his run. he has a longstanding low level ideological feud with the mayor. for a long time they have collected slanted magazine articles and passed them onto each other. so, charlie's first council meeting the mayor decided that it is about time for them to start saying the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of every city council meeting! mayhem ensued. charlie's place is right on rte 20. folks were not only driving by and yelling at him, someone went by and threw eggs at him. although the measure was voted down, it was brought up again at the next meeting, packed with the folks from the vfw, et al., and passed. poor charlie. i feel for you folks out there.
