Chicago has the nicest people in America!
I was down in the Loop late yesterday afternoon and as I started up the stairs to the El platform I fell, tearing my pants and gashing my knee. This lady walking by--- a total stranger--- saw me fall and hurt myself, and she came over and asked if I was OK. As soon as she saw my knee, she told me to stay put while she went to get her car, telling me that she would give me a ride home. She came back and picked me up, gave me some Handi-Wipes and Kleenexes to kinda clean up my knee and drove me to the front door of my dorm, me having already declined her offer to take me to a hospital.

Before I got out of the car, I offered her some money for gas, because I'm sure she wasn't intending to drive this far out of her way; when I did, she declined and said, "You're the same age as my son, and if he'd fallen and hurt himself like you have, I'd hope someone would offer HIM a ride home." I've been to most major cities in America, and I just can't see this happening anywhere but in Chicago, based on my personal experiences.

I don't even know your full name or where you live, but Dianne, you're the BEST! A million thanks!

:D

1. In 92, I was in Chicaho on my way outta the country.
I got off the EL downtown and was walking down one of the main streets at about 11PM. The tough looking 4-some were next to their car decked out in gangsta wear. They asked me what I was looking for, and I told them the Holiday Inn, and they gave me fucking directions. That was awesome.

7. I agree;
I have always found Chicagoans great folks, and I have even had wonderful experiences with the police, who have been very kind and helpful when I needed them.

8. kind yes, but friendly?
"Welcome to suzy's, what the hell do you want? Hurry it up already!"
I think Chicago proves those two qualities don't always appear together in the same person.

9. That's a great story, but Chicago's not the only place
Don't get me wrong, I love Chicago. I've lived here all my life. But I actually have a similar story from NYC. I was visiting there with two friends and we were in Midtown at about midnight, walking to a subway station. Suddenly a woman walking towards us tripped over a crack in the sidewalk and ended up cartwheeling into the street. We went to help her (being the kind Chicagoans we were) and were surrounded by at least twenty people wanting to help as well. Several people blocked traffic so she wouldn't get run over. Someone called an ambulance. Someone let her use their phone to call her family. Someone gathered up her spilled belongings. And most people stayed until the ambulance arrived to make sure she was okay. It was pretty cool.

11. She was trying to pick you up.
Oldest trick in the book. As a matter of fact, she probably pushed you.

Just kidding. :)

Welcome to DU.

Chicago is a great city. If we could only do something about the weather.
