30. Former Naperville Resident
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 08:38 PM by MikeH
I have been living in San Diego, CA since I moved out here with my folks in 1970 while in college.

However I did most of my growing up in Naperville, during a period which included the entire 1960's, and which for me covered later grade school through two years at North Central College.

I have been back a few times in recent years for school reunions. It is amazing seeing how the town has grown and changed since the time I lived there.

So hello to everyone from a former Naperville resident.:hi:

43. Report on Champaign Friends for David Gill Reception 2/19/06
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 07:35 PM by benny05
Sunday I attended my very first reception hosted at someone's private home for a progressive candidate, David Gill, who running for Congress in the Illinois 15th district. His opponent is one who has been in Congress for quite a while, but I think Gill has a very good chance to win.

Gill is a practicing family physician who supports universal health care because in the short and long run, it would save all of us money. I asked him if paperwork shuffled around by all of these insurance companies frustrated him. He said no. It was people who waited so late to come get treatment. He gave an instance of a 39 year old full-time dad who had a heart attack and didn't pay attention to the warning signs. His wife wanted him to see a doctor, but he said because they were uninsured, he would wait it out and maybe the chest pains would go away. The man died, leaving his working wife with 2 children. Sad case.

Other issues:
Gill also favors public financing of politicians because the private ones done through lobby often have too much clout. He mentioned that in Maine and Arizona that a fraction amount of income tax goes to public financing. Good idea.

Gill favors moving away from fossil fuels and talked about a project called Apollo.com. I also found out his wife is an avid (he calls her "rabid" :->) recyclist and buys Seventh Generation paper projects. According to the website, the name is derived from the Iroquois belief that "In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations."

I can see how retail politics appeal to Iowa citizens and NH, now that I've had a taste of it. There were about 15 people in all in a small condo, but everyone was seated comfortably, and he listened to their concerns and views. I enjoyed hearing their views. In addition to bringing up some issues, I asked the group if they minded if I took pictures to put on my blog, OAC, and now, Gill wants them for his blog. Good way to get the conversations going about JRE and other progressive candidates! He wasn't familiar with OAC blog, but said he had been reading good things about JRE in the news this week. I told him about the OAC audioblogs/podcasts and how they can reach a lot of people once.

I volunteered officially to be at his service, but I needed some training about how to do effective door-to-door campaigning. After all, I am a newbie.

46. Nice picture.
We were out of town last weekend, or I might have been there. Dr. Gill is an amazing man, no doubt. I remained convinced that if every voter in the district could just meet him and talk to him in person, he'd be a shoo-in...

47. There will be another house meeting-Gill--reception in C-U
Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 07:22 PM by benny05
I know Gill's office is planning to have a C-U volunteers pizza/movie (Outfoxed) meeting on March 11th--6-9pm. I haven't heard where it will be yet. But I hope to attend as I want to meet other volunteers.

Kevsand, I know someone who also wants to host a reception in her Champaign condo--later in the spring. I will keep you informed PM about this event, if that is OK.

I've been blogging on Gill's blog: http://www.gill2006.com

Easy to sign up for an account.

David Gill is so down to earth, and I appreciate his candor when he admits he's not fully up to speed on an issue, but welcomes more information from any of us. His "Prescription for America" is on target. He's so optimistic!

Another positive note: he has responded to a post I put on his blog, and on another one, his campaign manager did so, which may indicate I'm able to put forward some other issues that they will think about and address.

He is not on the DCCC target list as they still doubt his campaign viability. Gill needs to be on their list, and I said so to them. Please DU'ers, don't give money to them if you feel strongly that this practice is unfair in helping non-incumbents who have a real chance this year, especially if you want our new progressives to get in there!

Benny

66. You have a most cool brother
He fixed my 'puter when I killed it with an unnecessary Y2K patch year ago. I worked with him for 4 years. Great dem, great progressive, great computer geek, great guy. Cool family, too. So, I welcome you with open arms. Any sister of Kev's is a friend to me!! Although that Cardinal thing is a bit troublesome. I'm a Cubs gal myself...Chicago Cubs, then after 5 years across the river, Iowa Cubs...Cubs. Still, I try to keep an open-mind.

Welcome!! :hi:

68. Thanks on behalf of the family!
And thanks for the welcome. As you'll see from my response to you at the Democratic Beef--It's What's for Dinner thread, I could practically carry on a conversation by myself (rather argue) and welcome any interjections. :9

61. Hey, sis, welcome to DU!
Looks like the family is getting a very real presence here at DU, and I am glad to see it!

Next thing you know, Material Girl (the online name I use for our offspring) will be old enough to post and we'll need a forum here for all the kith and kin.

Welcome!

Laura

67. Hey, L
I owe you an apology! I was bitchy with you in some discussion a couple of weeks ago. I was bitchy in general around that time (hard as that must be to imagine), so it wasn't personal. Sorry, really!

Hugs to Material Girl (interesting handle). I've wondered how she was!

69. Oh--no problem!
Not to fret. Frankly, I figure everybody has days--ya know? I really don't take a lot of what happens online personally, anyhow. :)

Being strong willed I've been known to voluntarily wade into a fray, so there's not much you (as someone I know and like!) could ever do to offend me.

Material Girl (so nick-named because it REALLY freaks her out if you put her toys in time-out) is getting big. She'll be 9 at the end of May. She's playing softball again this summer (ask Kev about coaching the little girl's team, BTW!)

She "worked" with dad last summer at the office, and by all accounts did a super job of stuffing envelopes and making copies. Community organizing starts young in our household, I guess. She already thinks bulk mail is a game the whole family can play...

Regards, and great to see you!

70. She's 9!!
How is that possible?!!

That would explain why I feel old...I am!!!

I'm also curious. What does a toy do to earn a time-out? Btw, my beagle knows the command "Time-out!" and heads right to her crate. My organist thinks it's hysterical when this happens!

71. You can "time out" that kid forever and it doesn't register.
She'll just sit there--no impact at all on her.

Put ONE of her toys in "time out" and she just freaks out. The most effective thing we have found we can do to discipline her is take a toy away for a while--just put it up on the shelf.

She's actually a really good kid, but occasionally, we have to step in and be parental. That is when toys go in "time out." Ya gotta do whatever it takes sometimes.

Now, getting your dog trained to go into time out is pretty amazing. I really DO think they understand WAY more than we realize.
