IU trustee hit for 'tall, blonde' remark

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Tom Reilly, an Indiana University trustee and retired president of Indianapolis-based Reilly Industries, is in hot water with some minority alumni and administrators for an e-mail in which he encourages the school to take a different approach in recruiting minority students.

According to the Herald-Times, the e-mail touts the recruiting efforts of a Purdue University official and describes her as "tall, blonde, Scandanavian and attractive."
Purdue, Reilly noted in the e-mail, has accepted that its student body is overwhelmingly white, and has discovered enthusiastic white recruiters fare well in black high schools by promoting what the school can offer to minority students.

But IU trustee Clarence Boone, who is black, said he was outraged by the reference. Reilly is white.

The Herald Times Online (subscription access) has posted the 3-page e-mail. Here are some of Reilly's own words:

He's talking about a conference he attended...

"At lunch, I randomly picked a table and I had the opportunity to pick the brain of the newly appointed Under-represented Minority program director in the Admissions Office. Purdue has a new strategy..."

"She is based in Chiaago, not Lafayette. For the minorities, she will start by mining Chicago but primarily the "Region" in Indiana."

"She is tall, blond, Scandanavian and attractive. Purdue has found out that enthusiastic whites do better in black high schools in contacts, trips booked, follow-ups."

"Purdue does not pretend to be anything but a white school."

and later said

"Now that I think about it maybe I did not randomly select her table. Her energy was permeating the room."

1. He's a real piece of work
But the best part is how he's so blatant about it. :eyes:

3. ugh!
but at least his views can be rebuked when he expresses them - worse are those who work from these assumptions, use the assumptions to push policies, but do it covertly.

If this guy was old enough I would have to wonder if he was an administrator at IU Law School back when Dan Quayle got in, despite his poor academic performance, by being given a set-aside seat in the early days of affirmative action.

4. yeah, actually, the ones dumb enough
to leave a paper trail of their behavior are better than the one sly enough to be covert.

As for part II...he's probably in the right age bracket. :hi:

6. Right age bracket, but...
he certainly had no affiliation with IU before Mitchy-boy appointed him trustee. You'd think that Mitch could have found someone to push his agenda who was a little more above reproach and, oh, I dunno... an IU alumnus?

7. aha...thanks soonerhoosier
What? Mitch hide his agenda a little by wrapping it in an air of legitimacy? Nah, that could never happen.

2. I know african-american students who are scared to death of
even visiting Purdue. Purdue's strategy is working real well. :sarcasm:

5. The Star has the story today.
Star story:
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060317/NEWS01/603170509/-1/rss

An Indiana University trustee who linked Purdue University's success in drawing minority students to a female recruiter who is "tall, blond, Scandinavian and attractive" stopped short Thursday of apologizing for the remark, which offended a black trustee.

But "knowing what I know now, I would have, of course, used a different example to demonstrate what I meant," said IU trustee Tom Reilly Jr., who made the comment in an e-mail to trustees last month.
The subject of Reilly's note, Patti Dulik, recruits minority and female students for Purdue. Reilly's description of her, and a comment that "Purdue has found that enthusiastic whites do better in black high schools in contacts, trips booked, follow-ups," angered IU trustee Clarence Boone, Gary.

Boone, who is black, responded that he was "enraged at the overt racial implications of your e-mail," according to records made public by IU officials.

They also have a better link to the complete e-mail:
