1. Awww Crap!
:banghead:

There's one right by my house and I shop there probably 3-4x a week.

Hello Hy-Vee - guess I need to do more planning.

5. Is that why they aren't open on Sunday?
Hy-Vee is 24/7 and Fareway is closed on Sunday. I guess the "religious" affiliation explains that.

which is why we go there. x(

And it's so easy to stop in on the way home to grab everything for dinner.

This is a bummer.

10. I had heard they were very conservative but not the Mormon part.
I can't find any reference to LDS.

Wiki: Fareway is a retail grocery store chain based in Boone, Iowa. It has more than 95 stores, most of them in Iowa and a few in Nebraska and Illinois, and one in Minnesota. Founded by Fred Vitt and Paul Beckwith in 1938,<1> most Fareway locations are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.,<2> although locations in Omaha, Nebraska open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. (but close at 9 p.m. during the Winter season).<3>

Services and departments such as dry cleaning and video rental are not present at Fareway stores.<1> Additionally, Fareway stores do not sell hard liquor such as vodka, gin or whiskey. Stores only sell beer, wine, malt beverages and wine coolers. Fareway sells USDA Choice grade beef, the U.S. Government's highest grade of beef that is normally available to American grocery stores, to go along with its groceries.<1>

Keeping with the original founders' religious beliefs, all Fareway locations are closed on Sundays and most holidays including Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year's Day; most stores close early on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

12. Okay, I'm a big enough person to admit that I may be wrong. A judicatory
exec I know tells me this is true. He insists it is--still does. But I haven't been able to confrm it in my own googling. I've heard it from others, but those who've called me on it deserved to do so. This exec I know now says local stores may not be Mormon-owned, but the corp is. I have more research to do. I was stupid to jump the gun.

I don't suppose the fact that this is the first day in a week that I haven't had a fever wouldn't work as an excuse, would it? I should just stay in bed and offline until I feel better.

Mea culpa.

14. One hates to generalize but
based on their the donations of their owners/execs, one could assume that even if they didn't financially support prop 8, they did on 'principle'.

13. This is what America has become - choice usually means one of two
sometimes undesirable options.
I have written about this before. In IC as a young man there were 6 or 7 different chain groceries and a few Ma & Pa's survived. Now most towns have 2 - Hy Vee & Fareway and /or Wally.
It is the same way in nearly every category of business in the US - one dominant monster and one or two midgets that really don't offer true competition. This is what Republican laisez faire practices have wrought. Want chips? Frito-Lay or Pringles? Shampoo? Pretty much P&G. Beer? Bud, Miller, Coors (none of these American anymore BTW).
Play a little game with your self. Try to name any category with 5 viable entries and to make it more difficult make them American companies. Good luck!

I find it funny that "mericans" are drinking rice beer not owned by a US company. To top it off the beer sucks! hope you are feeling better big boy!
