Who is running against Roscoe Bartlett in 2006?
Is it true he will retire? I hope so he is 80 years old and ultraconservative.

1. Off topic post:
Why do you think he made the detailed presentations concerning Peak Oil? (I don't know that any other congressman has done so)

3. Link to his website:
http://www.bartlett.house.gov/
and his presentations are available under "Environmental Projects & Peak Oil" section.

I have read several books concerning this subject and can say that his presentation is consistent with those books ("Hubert's Peak", "Beyond Oil" (Deffeyes), "The Long Emergency" (Kunstler), "Powerdown", "The Party's Over" (Heinberg), and "The End of Oil" (Roberts)) One crucial question: is global oil production peaking soon (especially this decade, say)? If so, I would agree with many of the pessimistic projections of these authors, and it is hard to know how to begin to prepare for it -- but it important not to be blindsided about it, I think... One has to decide for oneself about this subject. (Thanks!)

4. If global oil reserves are substantially more than 2 trillion barrels,
then we probably have a good many more years (decade or two?) to go before oil prices sky-rocket. I am suspicious of neo-cons using doubts over this issue to gain support from many for their middle-east adventures, but then I would think they don't want to start a panic -- so I am unsure (but very apprehensive).

7. Quack! Thanks! One thing I wish about these candidates is
that they would come out and say "I am a Democrat" or are they other parties?

8. Do you know more about Duck?
I've heard conflicting things about his position on Choice, which for me is almost a "litmus test" issue. Any insight on this? I've heard that Karas is definitely pro-choice. (Or should I say "anti-compulsory-pregnancy"!)

9. To win here, you've got to run to the right:

My guess is Roscoe's retiring. Not that that is good news. State Senator Alex Mooney is waiting in the wings. He spend about a million bucks on his re-election campaign in 2002. He has the list, conservative base support, and political skill to get elected.

A conservative Democrat (think pro-life, pro-gun, etc.) might have a chance at betaing Roscoe. Between his misgivings about Iraq, supporting medical marijuana, opposition to the patriot act, Roscoe's left his right flank open. But that kind of candidate will probably not get through the primary. And even if they did, the Republicans have a huge voter registration advantage.

Mooney might attract a few serious Democratic candidates, but even he does, he'd probably win. Between the money, the name recognition, and his actions (which please many 6th District voters), he'd be a pretty big favorite.

Judging from the 7 candidates that ran in 2004, all we're going to get is political novices/periennal candidates. We nominate periennal candidate (Ken Bosley), and he ran a poor campaign. Roscoe won by his largest margin ever.

The 6th District is Republican. What Democrats here can do is support Democratic candidates in Frederick City, Frederick County, Washington County and Baltimore County. If enough local politicians develop support in those areas, a Democrat might be able to win eventually.
