Ex-Treasurer says he'll likely challenge Delahunt

Former Treasurer Joe Malone says he's almost certainly going to challenge Rep. William Delahunt for re-election because he thinks the veteran Democratic congressman has lost touch with his district.

Malone, a Republican, told The Associated Press Thursday he was convinced to get back into politics after seeing the public surge behind GOP Senate candidate Scott Brown, who won the special election for the late Edward Kennedy's seat this week. Malone was treasurer from 1991 to 1999, leaving office after a failed campaign for governor in 1998.

The Waltham native and Harvard graduate now lives in Scituate. It's part of Delahunt's Cape Cod and South Shore district and is the seaside town where Malone spent summers as a child. He's worked most recently in business development and as a Fox News political analyst.

1. That's great. He was in charge of the Treasury when a bunch of money was stolen.
There's a reason why Malone disappeared for nearly a decade after losing to Cellucci in 2000.

2. Let's hope Delahunt trounces him. The so and so's smell blood.
Brown's victory "emboldened the enemy."

3. Delahunt's yes vote on the $33 billion Afghanistan 'special supplemental'
isn't going to help him with progressives.

4. I'm guessing Malone would have voted for it, too, though. Did anyone vote against it?

5. Delahunt will kill his ass.
They think everyone will lie back and take it like Martha Coakley did? They'll find out QUICK that Massachusetts is still very, very blue.

6. Isn't Delahunt considering dropping out?
We should be thinking about Democrats to take his place.

I read in the NY Times that Delahunt was Norfolk County DA during that Amy Bishop case in Braintree that is now being re-examined because of U of A shootings. He might not want to go there and you know it will go there along with the same old/same old Chavez stuff. Delahunt also seems to be getting to be more of a homebody now that he has grandkids to play with.

I hope he decides soon - Malone has name recognition and is very telegenic - and after Scott Brown no one should ignore the telegenic factor.

Who are some Dems? I hear Terry Murray mentioned - doubt it.

Who else?

8. telegenic? He looks like Danny Aiello's half-gargoyle brother
Fox 25 is in his camp and signing his paycheck (as they increasingly become the same as their national cable news counterparts) but that doesn't make him telegenic.

7. I think Delahunt will opt out.
The Amy Bishop thing will be the tipping point.
