Creative living arrangements in Boston?

Boston DUers-

I'm looking at housing in the area, starting in August. I would greatly appreciate any helpful hints or recommendations on ways to secure affordable housing. I know that is somewhat of a joke in this area, but I want to exhaust all of my resources before giving in to an overpriced place.

Do you know any websites that are helpful in finding a low-cost place to live? I will be there as a single student, and really want to push the bounds of low-cost. Thanks in advance for any help.

1. There are lots of roommate situations available

With all the college students here. Check the Boston Phoenix classifieds ( http://thephoenix.com/Boston/Classifieds/roommates/ ) or local college newspapers. You may also want to consider some nearby towns that have public transit access to the city. (Revere, Somerville, Everett, Chelsea, etc) They tend to be a bit less expensive.

3. If/when you decide to come up and look around, the offer still stands.

At the moment it's unclear if one of my granddaughters is coming up for the month of July. I'm also going to be up in Portland, ME for a few in late August. Other than that I'll be spending some quality time at the beach....

4. Boston itself can be difficult. Contact your school for suggestions.

Try to share an apartment. Some spots in the North End may be cheaper. Ditto Fenway. But, I'd think about places outside Boston, but near an MBTA line or a bus line.

As for websites, of course, Craig's list. There is also realtor.com They are not specific to Boston. Tru googling "Boston real estate" or the name of a surrounding area, like Watertown or Somerville.
