DEARBORN, Mich. – The home of American’s automotive industry will be the backdrop Oct. 9 as Republican presidential candidates gather here for the next major televised debate of the 2008 Presidential Primary Campaign, the Michigan Republican Party and the University of Michigan-Dearborn announced today.

The debate, sponsored by CNBC and The Wall Street Journal, will be held at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn, Mich., a suburb of Detroit. CNBC will record the two-hour debate beginning at 4 p.m. on Oct. 9, with MSNBC re-broadcasting the event at 9 p.m. the same evening. The debate format, as well as its moderator, will be determined after further discussions with representatives from the respective campaigns.

“This is an opportunity for Michigan to highlight the issues affecting Middle America,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saulius “Saul” Anuzis. “Metropolitan Detroit is the home of the Reagan Democrats and this debate on economic issues will give Republican presidential candidates a chance to talk about the issue that affects Michigan families most – jobs. The automotive industry and manufacturing helped create the Middle Class, and this debate will allow voters to hear how the next president of the United States will deal effectively with the one of the most important sectors of our national economy.

1. Peter Werbe announcing the Republicon debate demonstration now ...
... on WRIF.

Peter said the protest starts at 1pm.

I'm assuming you won't be able to get close to the site if you show at 3pm.

3. So, how was the protest?
I was stuck at work. Didn't see the protest, didn't see the "debate".

What was protested? Anything good? The war? Single-payer health care? Iraqi corruption? Blackwater? Immigration? Oil? New Orleans support?

4. Almost nonexistent
The designated sign-waving area wasn't even half-full when I left at 2PM. The largest crowd there was the Ron Paul crowd. http://www.noiraqescalation.org/">Iraq Campaign was a distant second. Plus a few people in support of S-CHIP (why I was there, actually), some Romney supporters, and some Thompson people.

After a while, they all got bored of waving signs at the building, so they went out to the sidewalk to wave signs at the street.

Maybe it got better after I left, but I doubt it. A weekday afternoon during a school day is the worst possible time to organize a protest. (I was only able to make it because of a canceled appointment at work.)
