The second elementary school in as many weeks--this time Rutherford Elementary in Stillwater--has been revealed to have censored a local award-winning children's author when she was asked to visit the school to talk about writing. The author, Lisa Westberg Peters, has written several books, once of which is "Our Family Tree" and deals with evolution. As in a Monticello school recently, Peters was asked not to talk about this particular book in her writing presentation because of its "controversial" nature. Peterson declined the invitations to speak when they insisted on censoring her.
The Monticello controversy was covered in the Strib recently:
http://www.startribune.com/stories/389/5399009.htmlThere's a front-page article on the censorship at Rutherford Elementary in the Stillwater Gazette yesterday, May 16 (not online, unfortunately). But funny thing is, the book's author, is the wife of St. Paul Pioneer Press Editor Dave Peters, and yet the PPress hasn't even covered the brouhaha!
Is this happening elsewhere? Is this what our increased property taxes and schoiol levys are paying for? Not on my dime!
