Norm Coleman's term as a U.S. Senator ended at noon Washington time on Saturday, and by evening his hopes of winning a second term had been dealt an expected but serious setback as state officials counted previously rejected absentee ballots in St. Paul.

Democrat Al Franken held an unofficial lead of 226 votes over Coleman as this edition of the Star Tribune went to press, according to a newspaper tally of officials' count of the absentee ballots. Franken had led unofficially by 49 votes going into the day and gained a net 177 votes from the new ballots.

2. I hope so
but the article stated he has already gone to the MN Supreme Court...

Didnt he say earlier in this process that if he were the one behind in the count, that he would concede? Well, I am waiting...

3. If Normie has any hope of remaining active in Minnesota politics
he should pretend to be gracious and concede now. Perhaps now would be a good time to remember the words Norman spoke on Nov 5:

http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2008/11/coleman_claims.phphttp://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2008/11/coleman_claims.php

"Yesterday the voters spoke. We prevailed," Coleman said. He noted that Franken could opt to waive the recount.

"It's up to him whether such a step is worth the tax dollars it will take to conduct," Coleman said, telling reporters he would "step back" if he were in Franken's position trailing in the vote.

That same day former Senator Weasel also said he was: “humbled and grateful for the victory the voters gave us last night.”

Grateful, now maybe not so much, but he still has time to be humble.

12. Hangman's Noose
Someone told me there's a photo of Coleman with a hangman's noose around his neck in today's STRIB. I checked online but couldn't find it.

The noose is symbolic of Coleman's assertion that he would concede if he lost the vote count. Well, he did lose. Now he needs to quit or this would haunt him forever.

Does anyone have a photo or link to that pic???

13. I think it may have been the editorial cartoon
It was in the print edition, I'm not sure if it would be on line.

14. Norm's editorial cartoon (Strib)
Here's a link. If it doesn't show up, there are thumbnail images of the cartoons for January - click on the other one (or other ones if you don't read this today). I like it, did a screen capture for my desktop (a little blurry but works for me).

If the link doesn't work, from main menu: select Opinion > Sack > Photo Gallery cartoons from January

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out a way to get a permalink for that particular cartoon.

Coleman camp: ‘We’ll take legal action to remedy Franken’s artificial lead’
By Chris Steller 1/3/09 6:40 PM

Norm Coleman’s attorneys vowed to go to court to make up the ground Coleman lost today after more than 900 absentee ballots that had been mistakenly rejected were tallied, increasing Al Franken’s lead to 225. “We’ll take whatever legal action … to remedy this artificial lead,” said Coleman recount attorney Fritz Knaak.

“We’ve had better days,” Knaak conceded, admitting that “the numbers are what they are.” But he repeated that the “process was broken” and predicted that “the election will still be called in Coleman’s favor.”

I hate that hypocritical weasel more each day.

But, let's look on the bright side, as of noon today, he is no longer a senator.

8. Norm Coleman's term as a U.S. Senator ended at noon Washington time on Saturday
I love that sentence. It sounds wonderful to my ears.

I don't expect that the weasel is likely to stop this nonsense, as he suggested Franken should/could on Nov 5

If he does take it to the courts and drag it out, Minnesota is the loser for however long it takes for us to have a senator at work in Washington.

9. When (and if) we reach the point where Normie finally has to concede
should we all meet and form a conga line in front of his office?

My mother has fond memories of conga line on Hennepin Avenue on VJ day and, while Coleman conceding might not hit the level of WWII ending, it's still going to feel awfully good and I'm going to feel like dancing.

At a minimum, we should have some kind of celebration.
