TENTS GOING UP DRAWING ATTENTION TO HOUSING CRISIS

IN CONJUNCTION WITH MORATORIUM PETITION DRIVE
This Sunday the first "tent city" encampment will go up in Leslie Park's yard, 3749 Park Ave. S. Her redemption period ends November 30th. Signs will be posted informing passersby "A U.S. foreclosure occurs every 13 seconds!" More tents will go up later in the week at another home in danger of foreclosure. The following week, one or more "tent cities" will crop up on the U of Minnesota campus. Part-time tent-dwellers and other volunteers are being recruited to gather signatures calling for passage of the foreclosure moratorium bill that was introduced early this year.

Barbara Byrd's court date is Wed., Oct. 21st, at 1pm in Room 1458, Hennepin County District Court where she will file suit against EMC. To recap her story, Barbara is a 50 year-old working woman whose duplex in Brooklyn Park was financed through EMC. The Bear Stearns Companies, LLC and its subsidiary, EMC Mortgage Corporation, recently agreed to pay $28 million to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they engaged in unlawful "predatory lending" practices in servicing consumers' home mortgage loans.


Barbara has owned her duplex for ten years. In March 2009 when she lost her tenant and fell behind in her ever-rising payments, EMC made notary date-errors in the foreclosure documentation. During her June eviction hearing in housing court, the judge had assured her that should would NOT have to move. Still a 24-hour eviction was posted on her door July 6th, and Barbara spent sleepless nights for fear of being thrown out. Because she works nights, she was at home to witness inspectors peeking in to determine whether or not the property is vacant and had to keep sticking her head out the window to prove that she was living there. Since the temporary stay of eviction, she has lived in relative peace waiting for tis Wednesday's court-date. PLEASE JOIN US!
