Where to take a prospective U of M student to experience what Minneapolis has to offer.
My daughter has been accepted to U of M and Wisconsin. She loves Madison but wants to compare what Minneapolis has to offer. I grew up in ND and spent a lot of time in Minneapolis, but my knowledge of what is happening downtown is very much so out of date after my "exile" to Wisconsin.

Sooooo, we are going to be in town Thursday night. She loves the metro feel of big towns. She's musicy, quirky, vegetarian. Any suggestions?

1. I'm a Saint Paulite, so I'm not certain. Go here:
http://www.citypages.com/

And send your daughter to that link, too. It's the place to look.

2. There are several quirky, cool places to live as a student.
Dinkytown / SE Minneapolis (university district)
NE Minneapolis
Uptown Minneapolis = C.A.R.A.G., ECCO, Lowry Hill East (The Wedge), Kenwood

3. If she lives on campus, she'll be on direct bus lines to both downtowns
and can even take the #6 from Dinkytown to Uptown and the chain of lakes. Before she graduates, the light rail between the two downtowns should be finished as well.

I don't know what your daughter is interested in, but with two large cities side by side, there's something for everyone.

4. Dinkytown and also east Hennepin area. Less traffic and close to the U.
Would stay out of Downtown, Uptown and possibly St. Paul since the amount of time is short for you both.

5. Going to contradict Glinda above and recommend Uptown.
Hard to get any more "musicy, quirky, and vegetarian" than that. :)

musicky, quirky, and vegetarian. They closed the Uptown Bar and put an Apple store in its place. Uptown is becoming Up-dale.

7. When I left hanging there in the early 90's it had already changed a lot.
Dinkytown and East Hennepin is close tot he U and traversed a lot by students. Coolest places are dispersed as well as events and such.
They can go to the Walker Art Center which is nearby.

9. She's been to Dinkytown (though not when school's in session)
East Hennepin might be an option.

11. yeah, it's changed a lot
There are still some old standby places though and some cool ones nearby like Bryant Lake Bowl, William's Pub, and Lyle's. The Uptown Theater's still there and the Suburban World is there, but not as a theater.
