Did anyone see the two anti-state casino ads
one put out by the Mdewakanton Sioux Community (Mystic Lake Casino) and the other by the Prairie Island Community (Treasure Island Resort and Casino)?

I thought the ads were very well done. I have written Pawlenty, and my state rep and senator about my opposition to opening a casino near the Mall of America.

1. I am wondering what Minnesota DUers think about
Pawlenty's proposal for a partially state-run casino.

I know he wanted to solve his budget problems by re-negging on the agreement with the various Indian Nations regarding Indian gaming. (yeah, now there is a great idea, re-neg with those people *again*). Now he appears to be trying to stong-arm them into complying with his wishes, via threatening them with competition. Not that I have any illusions about whether he will follow through with these plans, I know he will.

I am against the casino plan for several reasons, because it is proposed for Bloomington (where I happen to live), because I see it as a breach of contract between the State of Minnesota and the Indian Nations that entered the original agreements. The increased jobs and state revenues are more than countered by the increased pressures on law enforcement agencies and social services. Not to mention that having the casino near the Mall of America will diminish the family friendly atmosphere of the area.

3. I'm against it for the same reasons you are
including that I live in Bloomington. However, unlike my state rep, I do not oppose it because I have any moral objections to gambling (I just choose to spend my limited entertainment $ elsewhere). I just figure the Mall of America keeps the police busy enough now.

However, my main opposition is that it just makes me ill that the larger society is trying to screw the Indians again.
