We will be meeting at the Carnegie-Midtown Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday (May 5). This is the first meetup in our new location, so let's make it a good one!
I was reminded at the last meetup that our group does not have a mission statement yet. This was because I had no idea what direction our group would take. For a while, I even imagined a 'Blunt Watch' type of thing. I quickly found that there are several good sites dedicated to that pursuit and it seems redundant to have another. So.
Democracy for America is going to step forward and take the role of facilitator for the various groups in Southwest Missouri. We will be recruiting new members in creative ways (I have a few ideas and would LOVE more) and shunting them to other organizations already well-established. We need not make a huge name for ourselves or have a huge budget. We will welcome people and make a strong grassroots presence by helping to unite the other groups in this area. We will disseminate information on meetings and also provide a background voice in promoting candidates. There are many jobs which need attention. Trying to form yet another group makes no sense. It does make sense to make the existing groups more easily accessible and help others find their political voice. In that vein, here is our Mission Statement:
OUR MISSION is to facilitate and promote unity between all existing and future Democratic/Progressive/Liberal groups operating in Southwest Missouri; to provide an 'open avenue of entry' for new members to various groups and to promote such groups with the express purpose of building a strong grassroots presence for 2006 and beyond.
