TRENTON - A year after strengthening their control of the Statehouse, New Jersey Democrats have raised about six times as much money as Republicans, according to campaign-spending reports released yesterday.

With help from organized labor and wealthy Gov. Corzine, the three statewide Democratic political committees raised about $1.35 million from Jan. 1 to March 31. The three Republican committees raised about $222,000.

The Democrats also spent about three times as much as Republicans and still have $2.2 million combined. Republicans have about $533,000 on hand.

The reports provide a first glimpse into the money being raised for the 2007 races for all 120 seats in the Legislature. They are the first ones to detail fund-raising and spending since Corzine won office and Democrats increased their Assembly majority by two seats to 49-31. The Senate, which Democrats control, 22-18, wasn't up for election last year.

Corzine, a former Wall Street tycoon, gave $25,000 each to the state Democratic committee and the Assembly Democrats. The state party spent about $290,000 on his inaugural.
