It use to be a resort town ages ago and then back in the 80s it kinda turned into a dumpy place to go. Bruce Springsteen, who was not from Ashbury Park but spent much of his time playing there in his early years, led a revitilization of the town. I think it's turning into a resort beach once again.
It's undergone a huge overhaul and now has awesome galleries, a great artsy feel . . . . good restaurants, beach services, etc. etc. I think there are only two hotels there though . . .
in Atlantic City and move it to Asbury Park. The entire landscape changes. I was there in the spring and didn't recognize the gentrified business district. It's come a long way in five years.
And Asbury Park has made a remarkable comeback since I moved to NJ in 2007. If it's not a resort town yet, just wait.
Huge LGBT community there that has really cleaned the town up. Even their anti gay state senator (for now) mentioned that in his foot in mouth speech on marriage equality.
