Garrett stalling on debate, group says

Bergen Record

Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Sussex, is dodging a debate that the League of Women Voters wants to organize between the first-term congressman and his Democratic opponent, the league's Bergen County president said.

The league, along with a Mahwah civic group, has been trying to schedule a debate at Ramapo College in October between Garrett and Democrat Anne Wolfe, a former Bergen County Improvement Authority chairwoman from Mahwah.

The league has already scheduled a debate for county freeholder candidates in October.

But Garrett, 45, who is seeking his second term representing the 5th Congressional District, has refused to commit, said Minna Greenberg, president of the Bergen County chapter, who has tried to organize the debate with the help of the Citizens Advisory Committee of Mahwah.

"It's been a runaround," Greenberg said.

2. Where's Garrett?
Where's Garrett?

EDITORIAL BY THE RECORD

ON his campaign Web site, Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, calls himself a "mainstream Republican tax cutter." Is that why he hasn't agreed to debate his Democratic challenger, Anne Wolfe, in Bergen County? She would likely accuse him of being a hardline conservative whose views would not appeal to moderate voters in the 5th District.

What's Mr. Garrett's response?

He has been offered a half-dozen opportunities to debate Ms. Wolfe. At this point, he has accepted only two - forums sponsored by the Warren County Chamber of Commerce and a radio station in Hackettstown, which is also in Warren County. That area is more conservative than Bergen County.

He has not said whether he will attend a debate at Ramapo College sponsored by the League of Women Voters, scheduled for Oct. 21. Mr. Garrett's campaign manager told The Record this week that the congressman's responsibilities and changing schedule prevent him from committing to the League of Women Voters debate at this time.

Interestingly, Mr. Garrett committed to the Warren County debate, scheduled for next week, and the radio debate, scheduled for the end of this month, back in August.

3. Warren County COC Debate
I found out last night that Garrett will not be attending the Chamber of Commerce Debate on Tuesday in Warren County, either. WRNJ is on a Thursday at 10 AM, Garrett obviously does not want the working man and woman to hear about how he voted to cut unemployment benefits with this first vote.

4. Why can't Garrett find time to debate?
Why can't Garrett find time to debate?

There are nearly 108,000 registered Republicans in the 5th Congressional District, plus 62,000 registered Democrats, 214,000 undeclared voters, and 1,400 registered independents.

There are no registered idiots.

Someone forgot to mention this to Rep. Scott Garrett, whose excuse for not committing to debate Democrat Anne Wolfe in Bergen County or Passaic County - which account for only a measly 69 percent of the district's population - would be accepted only by an idiot. Chief among Garrett's excuses is that, darn it, he just hasn't been able to find the time.

He has, however, found time for partisan visits. But debate the issues? No.

Garrett is the freshman Republican from Wantage who is after his second term in the House. It would be a mark of delectable political candor if he simply were to imitate the outlaw in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and say through a sneer: "Debate? With those registration numbers? I don't need no stinkin' debate."

But he doesn't say that.

5. Garrett pulls out of last debate.
it's official, the WRNJ debate is cancelled

and, this bastard is saying that he voted to fully fund NCLB in an op/ed in the bergen record, and it's a lie

call him up and ask him to give you the bill he voted for

It's certainly not HR 2660, from 7/10/03

6. RE: Garrett pulls out of last debate.
Dean Dozener Anne Wolfe doesn't get to debate right wing incumbent Scott Garrett (NJ-5).

He has been invited to dozens of debates, but he has backed out of every single one, insisting that (some of) the constituents will get to hear him defend his "record" on WRNJ radio, which is only heard by 15% of the district in rural Warren County in the west, as opposed to metropolitan, and more liberal, Bergen County, which includes 70% of the population in the district.

What has Scott Garrett got to hide? Not one, but two editorials in the Bergen Record have called him on this,

and,

""Given Congressman Garrett's congressional responsibilities and often changing congressional schedule, we cannot commit to the debate at this time," Garrett's campaign manager, Matthew Barnes, said in an e-mail Tuesday. Garrett has committed to other debates next month."

But he has backed out of every single debate!

Please go to Anne Wolfe's web site, http://www.WofeforCongress.com and contribute to her campaign. We need to get her message to the district.

Scott Garrett is to the right of George W. Bush. He was the first candidate to ever be endorsed by the Club for Growth. You know how they loved Governor Dean last year. Wouldn't it be sweet revenge for a Dean Dozener to take him out after only one term.

Warm regards,

Erik Anderson
