4/29 Official NYC Meetups & Protest Compilation Thread
**IS ANYONE BRINGING THE DU BANNER OR IS ANYONE MAKING ONE SO FOLKS CAN FIND US IN THE CROWD?**

Since many people are coming from out of town & are asking about the meet-ups & the protest, I thought it would be a good idea to put them all in one post.

There are meet-ups planned for Friday & Saturday nights. Come to one or both, if you can. :)

Friday night meet-up spot: ? (Lynne?)

Saturday night meet-up spot, info courtesty of bettyellen's post: Nancy Whiskey Pub, Saturday April 29th, 7 PM on (or you tell us)

1 Lispenard St corner of West Bway, on block south of Canal Street
(also where 6th Ave converges), Tribeca, NYC
Subway lines 1+9, and the A C or E get off at Canal Street stop

**Saturday morning meet ups (unofficial, since we're grabbing breakfast in different places)**:

If DC is any indication, you should be in mid-town by 9. Lynne, Joan, Sharon, & I are staying at Hotel Stanford on 32nd between 5th & Broadway, close to the Empire State Building. Lynne is having breakfast there. BE suggested another spot for breakfast closer to the march itself, the City Bakery, w/link: http://thecitybakery.com/

**Meet up place for the March**

As close to this as UFPJ will let us get. From LynneSin's post:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=169x5636

I got this email from UFPJ, however, so we may have to line up on the west side of Broadway:
http://www.april29.org/article.php?id=3211

Again, they want folks to start lining up about 10:30, but if masses of people arrive as I think they will, your best bet will be to get to mid-town as early as you can. Meet up with Lynne at the Hotel Stanford or with me, Sharon, & Betty Ellen at the City Bakery.

See you Saturday! :hi:

1. The only meetup with me is at the 10:30 location
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 08:10 AM by LynneSin
I hate to be rude, but every time I do one of these protests, I'm up at 7am trying to get my act together to organize breakfast and get everyone to the location. After DC (and the long hike without working metro), I figured it's best for people to find their own breakfast. I'll be honest, it's a long day and I plan on sleeping in until about 9:30, take a quick shower, grab breakfast and head on down. If someone comes to the Stanford and wants to meetup with me there I'll be happy to walk down to the protest with them. But if they want breakfast they should find it on their own. For once in my lifetime, I want to be a bit well rested so when the Saturday night party comes around I'm not ready to crash 20 minutes into it!

There will be no banner because it's at the DU office in DC. Perhaps Friday night we can grab some posterboard at the Duane Reade around the corner and make a quick sign designating us as DU. With the price of gas, I'm taking the train in this time so my luggage is limited. Plus NYC protest do not allow sticks - the best we can use is the cardboard tubing found in gift wrapping.

I promise by Wednesday I'll have a location for the Friday night bar. It's been wickedly busy here at work!

EDIT NOTE: I encourage everyone to join the group down at the City Bakery. Mind you, the past couple of protests I've put myself through very long days (usually on very little sleep because of the friday night parties) and by Monday I'm sick as can be. I"m just enjoying a few extra hours of sleeping in because when I go back to work on Tuesday (I have a vac day on Monday) I have a very stressful week.

2. The city bakery link
shows a map of Los Angeles :D

As of now, I plan on being at the march DU meeting site at 10:30, and will be bringing my circus tent of a DU shirt, we can wave that !? I decided not to wear it til I get to the march, don't want to get "freeped" on the subway :silly:

The Stanford is on my way, I could possibly meet you guys there earlier and follow along to the City Bakery? I'm like Lynne, depends on what's going on Friday night as to how early I'll be launching from my hotel.

3. You can come to the stanford
I'm just not heading down to the breakfast so I can sleep in a bit.

We'll have plenty of other activities to hang out with DUers and we can grab breakfast at several restaurants nearby including the Coffee Shop in my restaurant.

I'll PM you the details

4. Thanks for the Catch, Catch
:silly:

I don't think you have to worry about being "freeped" on the subway in NYC. There was one freeptard in DC who kept following me up & down the platform with a smug look on his face, but once we got on the train, his smug look got less & less smug each time more protestors piled on at each stop! Poor thing looked like a wet rooster by the time we got downtown.

I'll go back & figure out what happened to the City Bakery link. I know I've seen the actual link somewhere. :)

6. the link works actually, you have to wait a moment and click thru to CB NY
they just opened a branch in LA, so they have changed the first page on their site to show that.

they have amazing baked goods, so it could be a good pick to just pick up a treat on the way to the march.

It's 3 West 18th Street just in from 5th Av.

5. Updated City Bakery links
Thanks again, Catch!

http://thecitybakery.com/index2.htm Yes, it does start out with a map of LA, but eventually, there is a link to City Bakery NYC. :)

9. I'm not getting this - but the again I'm blonde
We have to enter in at 18th street for the protest? or just from the west side of broadway (meaning anywhere along the route as long as it's on the westside)

I need to update that ASAP if we have to change the block where we're meeting. In previous protests you could enter in at any place so this is all new to me

12. You can line up on any of the streets
just on the WEST side of Broadway. Each contingent is planning its own pre-march rally & UFPJ wants them to assemble on the east side of Broadway.

My thoughts: it's going to as jammed, if not more so, than DC, so the closer we can get to the front, the better. :) Maybe the west side corner of 18th & Broadway near the City Bakery would be a good spot? :)

10. Hi Bettyellen
You're right.....you should try for 18th so you'll be in the front.
BTW, my PMs to you are not working.

13. The front isn't a good choice
I don't mind moving it back a few blocks but with us trying to meetup with other DUers along with everyone else who wants the front - it's going to be a massive jam for front of the line. I'd rather split the difference and go for the middle of the line - like 20th Street. Even with the Breakfast meetup at the City Bakery, we'll have DUers coming in until the start of the parade. The front will be packed.

Can we survive with 20th & Broadway on the west side of the street?

14. I was thinking the front cause the way I remember the protest against
the RNC, the beginning of the line was the best place to be.
Maybe (and probably) it doesnt really matter......Im just going by my own experience.

15. i said 5th + 18th because that block is closed off for staging....
if you look at the highlighted part of the map- they are suggesting to line up on side streets including 18th and feed in to Bway.

that's why i said 18th + 5th, and not Bway. Bway will be too crowded down at 18th.
NW corner of 5th + Bway. that way when the crowd looks like it's going to finally move, we can make sure everybody's out of City.
(Since it is two doors in from the corner.)

Maybe we should make City Bakery the meet up point. If folks want to have brekkie elsewhere, cool, but meet up with us there? :)

Or at least know where we're going. I printed out all of the original stuff, but not the changes. As long as we know how to get to City Bakery it sounds like we'll be okay.

21. it's just off the corner, west of 5th AV on the North side of 18th St
so of the four corners that would be the one closest to your hotel. heading down 5th, that's the right side and the first part of 18th you'd hit. make a right onto 18th + you are there.
last i saw, there was a construction awning wrapping that corner building and they had painted City Bakery on it pretty big just in from the corner- because i think the normal sinage is a bit obsecured by the awning.
woo hoo

23. **SATURDAY MORNING MEET UP FOR THE MARCH**
Based on info gathered from various emails & our correspondents on the ground, bettyellen & karenca , I'm moving the Saturday morning meet up spot for the march to the corner of 5th Avenue & 18th Street, in front of the City Bakery. You can have brekkie anywhere you like, but from what I gather, this is the spot to be: it's on the west side of Broadway, where UFPJ wants us to line up & it's close to the front of the march.

The official assembly time for the march is 10:30, but please do take into account the vast number of people who will be attending the march & try to get to this spot by 9:30, maybe earlier if you want to eat. (I'm basing this on my experience in Sept. in DC, where people were crawling out of the woodwork by 9:30.)

I would like to thank everyone who helped gather information for the various spots & pubs for the meet-ups. See you there!! :hi:
