UNC's Dean Smith Featured In Ad For 'Devout Democrats'
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Legendary North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith says in a planned newspaper ad campaign that being a person of faith and voting Democratic can go together.

"I'm a lifelong Baptist and vote for Democrats," Smith says in the ad. "One reason? Democrats are serious about alleviating poverty."

Smith declined comment about the ad,.

The campaign is the product of Devout Democrats, a new Chapel Hill-based political action committee headed by University of North Carolina law student Chip Muller.

Muller said his group plans to run the ad in the western part of the state, where Democrat Heath Shuler and Republican Rep. Charles Taylor are staging a fierce U.S. House campaign.

Muller wants to cast Democrats as good choices for religious voters.

"The way the Democratic and Republican parties have talked about religion made it seem like the Republican Party is the moral choice," Muller said. "We believe that's not true."
