Diebold machines cause Montgomery Co. to count all night.
This article from the "Dayton Daily News" blames it on "errors, unfamiliarity with computerized voting." And confused poll workers, lots of confused poll workers. (My precinct workers were so inept that my husband walked out before casting his vote -- it's OK, he's on the dark side and we didn't want his vote.)

Officials had to get people out of bed to go look for 186 memory cards that were missing. The polls closed at 7:30 pm and the unofficial vote tally wasn't posted until 6:43 am.

Anyone feel warm and fuzzy about electronic voting in Ohio?

1. But But But....
Blackwell's office said the problem in Scioto County was an isolated incident and that voting went smoothly everywhere else!

You can practically hear the sarcasm dripping from the headline of this one!

Scioto unique in election problems

by Mark Shaffer PDT News Editor
Wednesday, November 9, 2005 11:18 PM EST

Scioto County was apparently unique in the amount of troubles it had with its new computerized voting system.

The results for Tuesday's election came in late, around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, and the Scioto County Board of Elections put the blame squarely on Diebold, the company hired to computerize the county's voting system, and Dayton Legal Blank, Inc., the company that supplied the ballots.

According to the Ohio Secretary of State's office, of the 44 counties that switched to computerized voting systems for Tuesday's election, most counties went with a touch screen system....

3. Montgomery Co., APPARENTLY UNIQUE Scioto Co., and
the newspaper article references problems in Lucas Co. where vote counting didn't stop until 9 am Wednesday.

Oy!

4. And Clermont Co., irregularities, too.
(Reference VolcanoJen's previous post in Ohio forum).

That's Dayton, Cincinnati, Portsmouth, and Toledo. A good chunk of our state, I'd say.

Things sure went smoothly, didn't they? Sarcasm off.

5. I've sent a LTTE of the Portsmouth Daily Times...
... encouraging them to keep up the reporting/investigation of the Diebold debacle. It won't hurt to send a word of support to even small town newspapers which are showing the kind of journalistic guts currently lacking in our MSM!

2. This was the first time they were used.
They had problems shutting it down after voting closed, I do know that. Dennis Lieberman, Montgomery County Democratic Chairman, was at the Board of Elections that night and I feel real good about that. He stopped in at Headquarters around 11:00 PM...said things went well.
