Quinnipiac Poll: Casey Leads Santorum in Hypothetical Match-Up
From Politics PA:

FOR RELEASE: FEBRUARY 16, 2005

CASEY LEADS SANTORUM IN PENNSYLVANIA SENATE RACE,

QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS;

BUSH GETS NEGATIVE APPROVAL RATING

Incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum trails State Treasurer Robert Casey, Jr., a possible Democratic challenger, 46 – 41 percent, in an early look at the 2006 Senate race, according to a Quinnipiac poll released today. Another 11 percent are undecided.

Sen. Santorum has a 52 – 31 percent approval rating and voters say by almost the same margin that he “deserves to be reelected,” the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

Santorum would top other possible Democratic challengers:

· 47 – 39 percent over former State Treasurer Barbara Hafer;

· 50 – 34 percent over former U.S. Rep. Joseph Hoeffel;

· 51 – 30 percent over former State Rep. T.J. Rooney.

“This could shape up as the best Senate race in the country in 2006. Count on Democrats to pour in millions of dollars to try to oust a key conservative member of the Republican leadership, and the big GOP money-givers won't be shy in donating to keep Sen. Santorum in office,” said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

3. When Santorum goes to be at night, he has nightmares about Casey
And Casey's numbers have nowhere to go but UP.

Wow, look at The Village Idiot's numbers. He's really tanking in Pennsylvania:

TREND: Do you approve or disapprove of the way George W. Bush is handling his job as President?

6. This just proves
We need to tie Santorum to Bush as much as possible. The biggest obstacle here is Santorum's clout in the Senate. My thinking is Casey wants the governorship. Well, let him run for Gov in 2010 after he delivers a blow to Santorum in 2006. Not a fan of Casey, but hopefully we can get someone more progressive in there in 2010 after Casey becomes governor.

7. This is good news, but beware...
I agree that this is great news and I hope that Mr. Casey is considering running but we need to keep vigilant! Remember that we thought we had an unbeatable candidate to run against George W.

Beware of the Republican will and ability to get out the conservative votes to win! If we want to defeat Santorum we will need to show him for what he is and provide an alternative that the moderate Democrats and fence sitters will vote for....

The Bush backed Republican machine will do everything in their power to destroy the credibility of any opponent to Santorum (who is one of their conservative golden boys, potentially a candidate for President at a later date).

I for one am looking foward to doing all that I can to remove Santorum from office!:dem: :dem:

8. They'll pull out all the stops and use every dirty trick in the book,
no question about it. But, here's the thing: Bob Casey HAS NO SKELETONS. Not a one. The man's so clean, he squeaks. The only issue the right has to run against him is that he's never been a Senator, and Santorum will trot out every achievement (assuming he HAS some) that's benefited Pennsylvania in some way, shape or form.

Since the only reasons Santorum comes back to Pennsylvania are for photo ops and to advance his personal agenda, he's in real danger of winning re-election.

One other thing: Bobby Casey is BELOVED in that state, especially by union people, Catholics, pro-lifers and (especially) senior citizens, who hold his late father in high esteem, and with a great deal of affection. The Casey name MEANS something in Pennsylvania.

BTW, welcome to DU! :hi:

9. Thanks for the welcome!
I was moved to action by the last election! We need to get off our butts collectively as a party and define who we are, what we stand for and what we are against and most importantly why we are against it!
I do agree that Casey has broad appeal (and I will forgive the "Pro-Life stance, I'm pro-choice across the board)so hopefully he will be heartened by these numbers and run against Santorum.

:thumbsup: :dem:
