Kennedy urges extension of assault-weapons ban

I live in Patrick Kennedy's district. Very happy about that too.

Rep. Kennedy urges extension of assault-weapons ban

PROVIDENCE -- Saying there is no place for military-style assault weapons on city streets, Rep. Patrick Kennedy today urged his congressional colleagues to pass and President Bush to sign an extension of a federal law banning the firearms.

The ban expires on Sept. 13, a decade after it was signed into law by former President Bill Clinton.

The Rhode Island Democrat blames election year politics for the delay in renewing the ban, which bars the importation, manufacture and sale of the weapons.

"Homeland security does not only mean protecting the nation from terrorists abroad. It also means children can go to school and come back safely," he said.

Kennedy said there is no reason for these types of weapons, which include AK-47s, to be in neighborhoods.

"If the ban is allowed to expire, these weapons will once again circulate in greater numbers," Kennedy said.

1. It's not going to happen and it's a waste of time
People who buy these weapons will be subject to the Brady law and background checks. I assure you that terrorists who want these weapons already have them and that they will make no effort to obtain them legally.

4. It isn't the terrorists I am concerned about

It's the guy in Fiskeville who wants to assemble his own arsenal in the basement.

Despite the relative low crime rate in Providence and Rhode Island as a whole, this IS important.

Not just in my state, but nationwide.

It's good to see Patrick out there.

2. Great timing!
That should get the Dems a lot of votes in swing states.
