Edwards on ticket gives boost to Tenenbaum

South Carolina native John Edwards will be on the national ticket with John Kerry, but Inez Tenenbaum could wind up being the Palmetto State’s biggest winner in the just-completed Democratic “veepstakes.”

1. I worry about this...

Tuesday’s announcement by Kerry added a jolt of energy to Tenenbaum’s prospects. The latest campaign polls have shown her trailing Republican nominee Jim DeMint by about 7 percentage points.

That’s no surprise, given that he spent nearly $3 million on TV ads in his GOP primary campaign, and Tenenbaum has not yet been on television.

Inez should have been pouring money into this all along. I understand DeMint just went through a primary that boosts his recognition, but "early money is like yeast." Democrats are already handicapped in South Carolina, and letting a Republican beat you to the punch on name recognition handicaps you even more.

2. Keeping her powder dry

will allow Inez to go on tv when it matters - in the late summer and fall.

In 1998, Beasley tried an early money strategy with ads touting his record cutting taxes - the ads were ineffective.

Hodges held off until late summer. He was able to go up on the air in early August - three weeks before Beasley could match him.

Inez is smart to keep her money in the bank right now.

3. I don't know how Edwards could help Inez

when she has decided to run away from Kerry in her campaign. Inez has made it clear she wants no votes from liberals and I'll be happy to help her out.
