This Thursday is "Women's Suffrage Day" - in commemoration of the passage of the 19th amendment...and to that effect, a local group, "Running in Heels" (reflecting the newly dubbed "High Heel Vote" constituency*) has organized a noon-time march to/and rally at the Capitol. The message of the event combines: an ode to our foremothers for their dedication, risks and sacrifices made so that we women have the right to vote, to not take that right for granted and to reach out to all women with open arms to practice that right -- and that now, in this crucial time in history (but ain't it always?!?) -- we MUST pay special heed to exercising this right and all other participation in our democracy.
"Running in Heels" is a project of "Women against Bush"
http://www.womenagainstbush.org/*insert non-solicited opinion here: recognizing the not-particularly
feminist or inclusive implications with such a name as "Running in Heels," (the term "high heeled vote" is uniformly applied to single women 18-30 -- 78% or 12 million of which are estimated to skip the election; but I imagine not a large portion of them actually wear heels--mighty hard to maneuver in such in a meat processing plant, a corn field or a Taco Bell) -- the group's overall goal is one of instilling fun into democratic participation, which led me and the other ladies of the CodePink Austin group to readily jump on
board. It was actually pure coincidence that the lead local organizer from the group chose a "CodePink" theme for this march--she came up with it on her own accord, not knowing there was already movement out there on the same premise of women co-opting the color coded security alert system to promote peaceful solutions -- so it was kismet!

OK I love the idea but I'm not wearing high heels for anything.
