Local candidates in Austin
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 12:01 AM by ashling
I just got back to Texas after 3 years in Washington state.
:hi:
I'm trying to get up to speed on the local races around here.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

BTW, things have been extremely crazy since I got back. I hope to meet all you Austin DUers soon.

1. Your best starting place is
http://www.austinforchange.com/
Website of the Travis County Coordinated Campaign. Links to all the local races and the central clearing house for volunteers.

A couple of other local links
http://www.democracyfortexas.org/
Next meetup Wednesday Sept 1. 7pm@ Scholtz Garden, 1607 San Jacinto

http://www.austin4kerry.org/
Next meetup Thursday Sept 23 7 pm Mother Egan's 715 W. 5th St

There are two key legislative races: Mark Strama against Jack Stick and Kelly White against Todd Baxter. These ate two seats the Repukes won in 2002 which they then screwed their constituents by supporting the redistricting plan that butchered Austin.

We also have some important judicial races. On the Congressional level, Doggett is pretty much assured of victory; Lorenzo Sadun is waging a gallant write-in struggle in 10; and Rhett Smith is, well, he's on the ballot in 21.

We can carry Travis County and elect our local candidates if we get a big enough turnout. To that end, we are going full blast registering new voters and it looks like we should beat our goal of 25,000 by October 4.

Welcome back to Austin! :hi: If you want to volunteer on any campaign this fall, you won't be lonely!
