Last chance -- Hold Tom DeLay accountable - Contact Ethics Comm NOW
CONTACT THE CONGRESSIONAL ETHICS COMMITTEE (5 Dems, 5 Republicans) TO DEMAND THAT THEY VOTE FOR A FULL INVESTIGATION OF THE ETHICS COMPLAINT AGAINST TOM DELAY AT THIER SEPT. 20, 2004 MEETING. If they don't vote to proceed - Tom DeLay will not be held accountable for what he has done (and will be even more emboldened, if that is possible.)

The complaint covers three well-supported allegations:

1) DeLay's soliciting a bribe from Westar Energy in return for an amendment to the energy bill that would have resulted in millions of dollars in savings for the company;

2) DeLay's use of his PAC, Texans for a Republican Majority to launder corporate money, converting such funds into hard dollars that were donated directly to candidates for the Texas State Legislature; and

3) DeLay's use of the Federal Aviation Administration to track down a plane carrying Texas legislators who had left the State to avoid voting on DeLay's partisan redistricting plan.

1. Today's AP Story & 4 ways to Respond
The Houston Chronicle picked this up off of AP at 3:28pm TODAY. Reprint below.

If you are TIRED of DeLay's dirty politics, I see 4 ways to respond:

1. Harass the living daylights out of the Ethics Committee members, above, and urge your loved ones to do the same. (My *Mom* made calls last week! :) )

2. Write a letter to the Chronicle in response to the AP Story, telling them how disgusted you are with DeLay's dirty politics. He is such a bully that the only body with the power to restrain him is AFRAID to.

3. Give time and/or $$$ to his Democratic opponent, Richard Morrison -- www.morrisonfor22.com -- and urge your loved ones to do the same.

4. Do nothing, and REMEMBER that you did nothing to stop this man as he continues to destroy the country you love.

Do you see any other alternatives?

To all who have been making noise about this, THANK YOU!

WASHINGTON -- The House ethics committee ended its initial information gathering today and now must decide whether to order a formal investigation of whether Majority Leader Tom DeLay has misused his office.

The ethics panel could meet this week to determine whether to appoint an investigative subcommittee, but there is no deadline. The informal fact-finding had to end today under a committee timetable.

A three-part complaint was filed by a Democratic lawmaker defeated in the primary, Rep. Chris Bell of Texas.

Two allegations directly involve use of DeLay's congressional office. One accuses the Texas Republican of soliciting corporate contributions in return for assistance on legislation.

A second contends he improperly used his staff to contact U.S. aviation authorities, asking them to track down Texas Democratic legislators who had fled the state while trying to thwart a DeLay-backed redistricting plan.

The third allegation accuses DeLay of using his political action committees to distribute money from corporations to Texas legislative candidates in violation of state law.

DeLay has replied to the committee, but has not released his response publicly.

Last week, committee chairman Joel Hefley, R-Colo., and senior Democrat Alan Mollohan of West Virginia said they had been reviewing information but had not determined how to proceed.

2. Just read this on Kos
A Capitol Hill Democratic source tells me that your calls last week, demanding the ethics committee investigate DeLay, made a difference.

It wasn't so much that committee Democrats want to punt on the investigation, nor that they are more interested in maintaining the ethics truce. Rather, they have been seeking a way to move forward that doesn't invite retaliation from the other side. Of course, given who they're dealing with (DeLay), retaliation seems all but assured if they do anything other than punt.

In any case, the source said that your phone calls (and there were a ton of them) slowed the rush toward giving DeLay a pass. Committee Dems are apparently now holding a harder line, and the outcome is once again up in the air. I have included the committee member names and phone numbers below. It's best if you live in those members' districts, but not requried. On an issue like this, I'm told, committee members may be swayed by the national mood.

On another front, Rep. Chris Bell, who filed the ethics complaint against Tom DeLay, is also not ready to surrender, just today issuing a new letter once again urging the committee to move forward with an investigation. I have included a copy of that letter in the extended entry.

7. How did the reps vote on this?
I contacted Ken Hulshof's office (my rep) to let him know in no uncertain terms that I want DeLay investigated, but I never got a response from his staff, other than the automated "WriteRep Responses" that says thank you for contacting us, blah blah blah.:puke:

9. Answer to you Q...
They are still in a stalemate.

But now that Tommy Boy's 3 friends have been INDICTED in a Texas court, the noose is getting tighter!

The Ethics Committee hasn't figured out a graceful way out of this one. Tom DeLay is too arrogant and powerful to step down, but, as I put it to Judy Biggert's office in a phone call yesterday:

"We've got 32 indictments down here and STILL they're not sure if there MIGHT be anything wrong???" The staffer positively jumped out of her chair at that one.

They are so scared they don't know what to do. The pressure is WORKING. Thanks for contacting your Rep. & keep it up!
