Gov. Kinky -- the next leader of Texas?

DALLAS (Reuters) -- Kinky Friedman, the best-selling author, country singer and friend of the stray dog, next week will officially toss his ten-gallon hat into the ring for the 2006 Texas governor's race, his campaign said Tuesday.

Friedman will announce his bid to run as an independent on February 3 near the Alamo from a hotel where former U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt founded the Rough Riders.

Friedman, frontman for the group "The Texas Jewboys," is known for songs such as "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed" and writing books including "Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned."

The humorist however, is deadly serious about his campaign to unseat current Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican who succeeded President Bush.

10. I thought he was, too.
I also heard a rumor the other day he may run for Hutchison seat instead.

11. Kinky's kooky, but he won't get far
He won't run as a Democrat, so I won't vote for him. Gee, I hope that doesn't sound too closed minded. This ain't California and it ain't Minnesota. Those are states with quirky, independent streaks in their voters. I fear Texas voters are all too dependable and mainstream-oriented. You'd have to go back to Pappy Daniels to find a true nonconformist getting into high office in this state (and I say this being a HUGE fan of Ann Richards).

Kinky might make a splash in a little state, but Texans won't go for him. Not unless Perry does something really bad in his personal life.
