Will Dems run anyone in the 1st?
Will the Dems run anyone against Jo-Ann Davis? :puke:

She ran unopposed 2 years ago. I can't stand her.. especially since she is an original sponsor of the FMA.

1. Any chance you would run?
Give it a shot...hell, you probably have 43,000 donors right here on DU.com.

You know we'd put our money where our mouth is...

2. The thought has crossed my mind...
I just felt so depressed two years ago when i went to vote and there wasn't a dem choice.

Get this... Jo-Ann actually had a campaign table set up...

I don't think a Dem would have a chance in this area. It is so conservative and that is why I belive the Dems to promote a canidate here.. it is just not worth it.

I wouldn't have a chance.. as an out gay male... I would be run out of town.

3. Don't get depressed
I know this is a deeply personal choice...but this is at the heart of everything we as liberals stand for.

What's your standing in the community? Often times, it's easier to "hate" someone you don't know that to "hate" your neighbor. The smaller the degrees of separation, the harder it is to categorize someone.

You'd have my vote, simply because you're doing what conscientious citizens are supposed to do.

Propose a conservative fiscal budget policy.
Support education and the environment.
And come out for protection of the 2nd Amendment.

Take away the most divisive (and admittedly hypocritical) planks for the Repubs, and add the most hopeful plans of the Dem platform.

In your district, maybe being a Moderate is being a Dem.

It's wrong you don't have a Dem choice in your district. Maybe you won't win, but you'll make it at least a contest.

By the way - where do you live?

5. I have no idea where that is
Maybe it would be a huge risk.

But is it a risk worth taking?

How many people do you think walk into that voting booth and do exactly what you did - look down the ballot and say "I wish there were another choice."

Maybe you should contact the Dean PAC and ask how to explore this option.

We have to win back our state and national legislatures bit by bit, and you'd be our folk hero if you were on the front lines :)

7. Virginia?
You're right...that would be tough.

But I don't think it would be impossible because I'm guessing you're dealing with an educated conservative not a Christian fundamentalist.

You can propose the kind of "conservative" platform that used to typify the party - Lincoln, Teddy, etc.

- fiscal responsibility
- conservation of the environment

Then you can have a dialogue about social issues and to a lesser extent that is applicable - foreign policy.

Often times, it's the packaging that it's important to the voters - not what's inside the box. ;)

I say - pursue the idea of it, at least. Look at your options. Take informal polls in the supermarkets, etc. People can surprise you, I think.

11. I live in the 1st district also
I agree that the district is extremely conservative. This is my experience, my first time ever voting was in the 2003 State senate election Republican primary, I didn't vote in it because I was a republican, I consider myself a independent. The reason I voted in that primary was that I knew that there would be no general election for that state Senate, because the chances of a democratic nominee running was extremely small, but I sill wanted a say in my government, so I voted for Chicesther.

9. LOL thanks everyone...
I have thought about it... but I don't know how I would integrate running with my current job.

I do agree a campaign based on fiscal conservatism.. (IE balanced budget... is this the new liberal? I thought it was repugs who tout this?) I would run on a very social liberial platform that the government belongs out of peoples personal lives. I would advicate strong support for our troops. I would advicate for better health care, better pay.. (familes of troops should not have to live on food stamps...)

I definitely would not hide who I am, I would definitely take a stand for same sex marriage, I would definitely take stands on issues and not try make both sides happy. People respect those who take stands. They might disagree with them on certain issues but can have respect.

Well sorry to all... I haven't been around this past weekend.

I just didn't feel like signing on line this past weekend.

I do not like her at all.

13. There is no one running in the 1st.
I live in the 1st and am involved with the process. There were several nibbles at the nomination, including one highly qualified candidate.

Unfortunately, the 1st has been districted in an almost fail-proof manner for the R's. Davis has also raised her profile throughout the District and has very high positives. She generally runs a frugal campaign, but has access to almost unlimited funds if needed.

It has been a point of discussion among leadership in the 1st, whether it is better to run no one or a sacrificial lamb. My take is that whoever runs for the Democrats had better be in a position to make other Democrats feel proud. Whoever takes a job like this on needs to understand the difficulty involved and be well-spoken and principled.

Anyone interested needs to file by May 3, along with a filing fee of $1500.

14. Thank you for the info
I found the a site that listed a canidate, but somehow knew that it might not be totally true.

<http://www.dcpoliticalreport.com/stbyst.htm>

This is a pretty good site. Does anyone know how reliable it is?

Unfortunately Ms. Davis will win easily against any canidate that is put up against her. If the site is correct and the Greens are running someone for the spot. I will vote that canidate. If the Dems do run someone then the Dems have my vote.

15. The site does not look promising for accuracy.
The "D" name was the promising Democrat who formed an exploratory committee before deciding not to run. He does not go by "Carl." The Green is actually running in the 11th District.

I sure would like to see another name on the ballot, even as an independent.

16. Thank you once again...
I was wondering about the accuracy of the site.

My instincts were correct.
