To elect floor leaders, make committee assignments, and set the legislative agenda. The Chairman of the Democratic Conference is also the Democratic Majority (or Minority) Leader, but the Chairman of the Republican Conference is separate from the Majority/Minority Republican Leader position and is considered the No. 3 Republican Senator (currently, although not for long, this is Rick Santorum). The Conference Secretary is responsible for keeping the Minutes of party conferences.
