Stem Cell Research
WEST Virginia’s members in the House of Representatives had a political role reversal regarding embryonic stem cell research, the brightest hope among new medical developments.

Republican Shelley Moore Capito broke with Republican President George W. Bush. She voted to override his veto of a bill that would have allowed federal funding of more research.

Meanwhile, Democrats Nick Rahall and Alan Mollohan sided with Bush by voting to uphold his veto. Indirectly, they joined Bush in crimping possible future medical breakthroughs that might save innumerable lives and prevent great suffering. (In the Senate, both West Virginians, Robert C. Byrd and Jay Rockefeller, backed the research.)

1. This issue is so close to my heart
that I actually wasted a whole hour typing a very polite and pleading e-mail to Shotgun Cheney begging him to make his little puppet reconsider the veto. Not that it did me any good whatsoever.

I'm in Mollohan's district (Morgantown *waves*) and it just killed me to see him vote that way. Nick Rahall wasn't a surprise, but I really expected better from Mollohan, being from the district with the massive medical school and research facilities. :/

2. Rahall is going to hear from me about this.
Amazing that both he and Mollohan voted like this. Smelly was given permission to vote like she did, because they know most folks wanted to see this legislation pass, but they knew there was no chance of an override. They must be pretty scared of Callaghan.

Good for Jay and Bobby Byrd anyway!
