I don't know why he didn't post them in the Wisconsin forum too. They're great pics. Must have been a wonderful rally to experience. I can't tell you how much I wish I had been there.

on edit: typo

3. Not all was right in Madison . . .
I was at the rally today, I enjoyed myself. That wasn't the case for my roommate unfortunately. He's half-Indian half German, and as such, he has an olive complexion. He had a friend who got him very good tickets, and 15 minutes after his arrival, the police forced him out on the charge of "looking like he was up to suspicious activity."

What are we to do in a free society when a man can't attend a rally without being accosted by the police that he is paying to have there to protect him? What options are available to him to remedy this grievous injustice. This event hasn't changed his vote, but it has pissed him, and myself off alot and we know that something must be done.

I don't mean to sound sour on this, but there must be recourse available to us so that this doesn't happen again. Thanks for any comments and ideas.

4. How very unfortunate for you and your friend.
Madison is so ethnic I never would have expected such treatment. The ACLU has an office in Madison. Perhaps a phone call is in order.

6. ehh i beg to differ
i think that's one of madison's dirty secrets

it's notoriously liberal, but it's not too good to you if your skin is a little dark

but i live in milwaukee, which certainly isn't any better

I think I know Madison's dirty little secrets quite well. Being dark skinned and quite "ethnic" in appearance at the time, neither I nor my husband had any trouble even when we lived in one of the higher crime rate neighborhoods.

9. yeah, i wouldn't really know
as i've never spent more than a weekend or two at a time there

i'm just reporting on what some of my dark skinned and quite "ethnic" friends have related to me

different people mean different experiences, and glad to hear you haven't had any trouble

7. Are you sure it was local cops?
Seriously. The Madison Police Department (along with the University cops) was one of the first to officially reject a number of the provisions in the PATRIOT act and refuse to enforce them. I really doubt they'd engage in racial profiling like you describe.

Could they have been Secret Service or State patrol?

11. Well, that truly shocks me
given the fact that we have a black police chief, and quite a variety of ethnic groups well-represented here... hmmmmmmmmmmm, perhaps your friend actually WAS involved in some suspicious activity? A Lebanese friend of mine was in the front row of the blue section (along with her French friend), and not only did they have a helluva good time, but they went and talked with Sen. Kohl during the rally...

I heard of one person who was denied entrance, and that's because he was bringing a sign into the rally, which was prohibited. I know the guy, and he's a local activist, who knows exactly what he's doing, and I'm sure knew that he'd be tossed out on his keester.
