Progressive Pages- Need your feedback!
I just visited DancingBear's thread about wanting to come up with a directory of Repuke businesses to boycott and provide decent progressive alternatives for folks.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=2587076&mesg_id=2587076&page=

I'd like to help any way I can to compile this book.

Here's what I need from ya'll:

Give me the names and approximate locations of any local WI businesses you saw the last year or so with Bush/Cheney signs outside, behind the counters or in windows. Any "I support President Bush and our troops?" or anything equivalent?

Alternately, provide the names and approximate addresses of progressive or Democratic owned or Democratic-supporting businesses you can recommend instead.

Let us know about good AND bad experiences you've had patronizing good or bad businesses all over the state!

Thanks everybody!
Let's hear em!

1. Kick and a question...
Who knows Madison and can give us some good progressive companies there?

When we were there I LOVED the Canterbury Inn, and the Soap Opera. And there was that nifty little non chain drugstore next to the Canterbury that had EVERYTHING.

I also remember a really cool store down near that old theater near State and Gorham that was kind of a combo headshop, stationery store, African art source, and other interesting doodads. I think they'd definitely be good candidates. But I can't remember the name.

Also-- Etoile? Seemed very sort of artsy/organic food. Wanted to eat there and couldn't..ran out of money!

All feedback gratefully accepted!

2. Looking for places to work? or to shop at?
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 01:09 PM by htuttle
The drug store you're describing is the Community Pharmacy, originally known as the WSA Community Pharmacy, since it was started and used to be run by the Wisconsin Student Association.

Hmm...'cool store on State and Gorham'...? Maybe Cat's Meow? but that 's more punk. There's Knuckleheads, which is kind of a head shop/Spencer Gifts type place.

There was also Mimosa, which was right where you describe, but sort of behind the theatre. They were known most for their selection of cat furniture.

Never eaten at Etoile. A bit too snooty for me.

I prefer Himalchuli (Nepalese food), or one of the turkish restaurants on State Street. There's a couple of good East and West African restaurants that opened up a few years ago -- too hot for my tastebuds, though. There's also Morrocan, all manner of Asian, different types of Italian....just name a continent.

Don't forget Mifflin St Grocery Coop on Ho Chi Minh Trail (Basset st)-- worker owned and operated, they still have a Ché poster on the wall. :)

on edit:
Oh, I see. Looking for stuff for the Progressive Pages. Then you gotta include Union Cab (http://www.unioncab.com) and Willy St coop (http://www.willystreet.coop/). If you want to be thorough as far as Dane County is concerned, list all the cooperatives:
http://www.willystreet.coop/Resources/misc_coops.html

Oh, plus Rainbow Books, another worker coop.

3. Great stuff. thanks H!
If I'd known there was a Turkish place I would have tried it! Grrr..

We ate at a Greek place (kind of fast food type) on the same side of the street as the theater with an upper level where you can eat outside. Not bad.

It has to do with making wise buying decisions.

Why buy from a Repug when you can buy from a Democrat? Money is the only thing these people understand.

16. Signs in Washington/Waukesha County:
Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 08:01 PM by AllyCat
Germantown Mutual Insurance in Germantown had a B/C sign.

Graff Masonry in Jackson/West Bend had a B/C sign.

Really didn't see any K/E signs in businesses...not because they didn't support them, but more because they had more class than to spout political nonsense when they are supposed to be buying/selling.

17. B/C signs in Osh / FDL businesses
Hi guys,

I saw this post and had to contribute! Here's a list of businesses I noticed having * signs before black Tuesday:

-Tamara's Cakes in Oshkosh (sad, she does great wedding cakes)
-Georgetown Cleaners in Fond du Lac (corner of Johnson and Main--had a HUGE B/C and Michels sign)
-Kremer Pharmacy on Main Street in Fond du Lac (again, sad...locally owned, and they have a cute bug that delivers prescrips! WTF...)
-Peer Technical in Fond du Lac (also on Main Street)
-Most gas stations in Lomira (Michels country...agh)
-Edith's Bridal had a "Welcome President Bush" sign and a bunch of flags in their window the day Bush came to Fondy (not necessarily an endorsement, but worth mentioning)
-Ledgeview Lanes in Fond du Lac (east side of town on Hwy 23)
-and I recall seeing a huge B/C sign on the lawn of the real estate company across from Woodmans in Appleton (sorry, the name escapes me at the moment)

I know, most of these businesses are located in the HEART of Repug country. But I thought I'd post them anyway. Oh, also, I saw a church in Fond du Lac that had a Bush Cheney sign in front for almost 2 weeks before taking it down ("Bread of Life" ministries, the corner of 1st and Macy). What a shocker, huh? I think a certain tax-exempt group needs an audit by the IRS...

24. I think businesses who donate to the RNC ashould be boycotted, too
I started a list of business owners in my area who gave money to state legislators who voted for the anti-gay state amendment on its first pass. I haven't had time to finish it and I didn't get much support from any national or statewide LGBT groups regarding the idea of boycotting LGBT enemies. No one wants to make any waves.

In addition to the other Oshkosh signs, Robbins restaurant and Mueller Chrysler auto dealer (both on Hwy. 21) had Bush and Michaels signs.

I do think in your endeavor that it would be easier to list those who gave money to the RNC by just punching in zip codes at http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php

I totally support our right to choose to not do business with people who , in turn, spend that money on the politics of hate.

30. Robbins had Bush/Michaels and Bird signs! GO figure
Bird had her election night party at Robbins, even though she ran aa a Dem and the rest (Hintz, Hall, Feingold & Kerry volunteers & staff) had their party downtown in the 1st National Bank building. She didn't know what to do since so many of her suppoprters were also Bush backers. ?????? and didn't want them to feel uncomfortable. It wouldn't surprise me if she ran as a Repug next time, like she did in 2000.

As far as I know, Water City Grill seems either progressive or neutral. I've seen their food as some great fundraising events and the Greens used the Algoma Club (the upstairs room of WCG) for one of their candidate's events so it must be cool. It's in a very progressive neighborhood, with the Winnenago P& J, New Moon, 1st Congregational Church, Peace Park, and the vigil corner so I think they'd be vastly outnumberered LOL!!!

Fratello's, on the other hand, is owned by the Supples, who used to donate to Roessler and other Republicans on a regular basis. I'm reserving judgement this year, since it doesn't look like they did so far in 2004. We have encouraged people to mention the Republican slant if they went there, so as to gently encourage them in another direction. They used to have the "Rush Hour" lunch things--and I dont' know if that's still going on or not.

They are right in my neighborhood. The proprietor was really helpful when I was looking for anti-Shrub gifts for my Shrub-despising father. She said she had put up a political display table with even numbers of books from various writers on each of the major candidates and policies. Long-time customers came into the store telling her they didn't like the "turn" her store had taken given all the liberal "propaganda" on that table.

She left it up. Good woman!

And the cool independent pharmacy next door?

And I'd love to add the Soap Opera if it's still there. I really enjoyed my time in Madison. It reminded of the way Austin USED to be. Green college town, liberal, state capitol, lots of lakes....

Thanks for the new spots, ya'll! Check out Sapphie's link...it's growing by leaps and bounds! I'm trying to get all the HUGE amounts of info entered from our Texas thread like this one first, then I'll work on Wisconsin, since there's so much good info here.

The Soap Opera is still there on State Street.

Not sure about Canterbury and politics. I'm sure they didn't display any Bush signs, even if they supported him. I'd be a little surprised if they did support Bush, but they are a bit 'yuppified', so I can't say conclusively (as I can for the Soap Opera or WSA Pharm, for example).

How and what do you know about the pharmacy and The Soap Opera. How do we know their sympathies? Conversations with managers? Interaction with employees out at events? What?

I need a little bit of specifics when listing them-- not just "This guy is good," "This guy is bad." I need to know why.

Thanks!

The WSA community pharmacy -- it's a structural thing. The 'WSA' stands for 'Wisconsin Student Association' (who founded it), and nowdays the pharmacy is basically run as a coop.

In the Madison area, it's really much easier to list the few businesses that supported Bush than the other way around. It's a much smaller list.

I'm glad I can still love both when I come visit. I kind of wondered if the pharmacy was a co-op. GEEZ I wish we had more of those down here. Wisconsin has them everywhere!

We have Wheatsville down in Austin, but that's about it.

54. Madison Computer Works
aside from advertising on Air America -- these folks are really friendly and give us great service for our community center computer lab-- the voice on the commercials is Brian the owner-- who still solves problems in the shop.

55. Boycott Triangle Super Service
on the corner of Milwaukee and Bryan street in East Madison. Its a ma and pa car repair shop, the kind I usually like to support.

Its not just the Bush/Cheney sticker in the window, or the fact that they contribute to the Reps... if you go in there you will hear Limbaugh or some other right wing asshole on the radio all day long. They will try to talk politics with you and shove it down your throat- like telling me that John Kerry is not a patriot but George Bush is. And everyone in this country already has health insurance because all you have to go is show up at an emergency room.

Thoroughly brainwashed by the right wing and they will try to brainwash you too!

These are the ones we want to hurt. Not only for their stance, but for their ramming of bullshit at us.

Thanks!

59. RED-Chatter Box in Wausau WI
Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 08:14 PM by goddess40
Bush signs 2000 election and they still serve Freedom Fries.

Yeah, they hosted when Edwards came to town but the Freedom Fries clinches it for me.

RED-Olson Tire also in Wausau - Nasty man used to yell at us that we were unamerican for protesting the war. He didn't like that we carried our flags upside down for a while either. He also thinks the supreme court is full of liberals.

RED-Rose Garden -Wausau Republican strong hold, signs during the election.

BLUE-Martini Bar/Somethings Brewing - it's where we held most of our meetings when people came to town, 911 widows and siftboat debunker...

BLUE- Lawyers Christine Bremer, Peter Rotter, Roy Traynor

60. Thanks goddess!
Any extra information you can provide on tehse businesses is great-- addresses, ohones, Web addresses, etc.

And although Chatter Box serves freedom fries, we do have to also give them kudos for hosting Edwards. We have a rating system to help with that. Many people voted for Bush in 200 and switched, so they coulod have seen the light.

It costs money to print menus. Perhaps they just don't want to spend the cash.

the guy at Olson's....is he the owner, do you know?

Thanks for the info on Wausau!

65. New one for you, Cookays...
Emergency TV Service in Milwaukee. Everybody here knows their jingle from their TV commercials. They do well, I understand, because they do a good job.

I'd never been there before, but I took something in for service this past week, and noticed a Bush**/Cheney** lawn sign on the wall in service area in back. I hope they do a good job on my repair the first time, cuz I ain't goin' back.

68. Well, get goin'! LOL Here's another.
Second Day Service. Apparently they're a sign installation business. Their van has a W** "stealth sticker" on the back. The only contact info on the van was (414) 329-0872, and www.secondday.com.
