Republicans like Feingold, poll says

But appeal is likely to disappear once senator is challenged, says survey's leader

More than one-third of the Republicans surveyed in the latest Badger Poll have a favorable impression of two-term Sen. Russ Feingold, a Democrat who has disagreed with the president on Iraq, the USA Patriot Act and the Medicare drug benefit.

Richard Graber, the chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, challenged the 36% favorable figure reported in the latest Badger Poll, conducted by the University of Wisconsin Survey Center.

"There's no way, no how, 36 percent of Republicans are going to support Russ Feingold," Graber said. "This is one of the most liberal senators in the entire country."

Republican views of Feingold, however, have held steady through polls dating back to October. In that poll, 31% of the Republicans said they had a favorable impression of the senator.
