A Brown County supervisor wants the County Board to take up the issue of Social Security. Sup. Jack Krueger introduced a resolution at Wednesday's County Board meeting to oppose privatization of Social Security. Specifically, the resolution says Congress should:

1. Repay the money borrowed from the Social Security Trust Fund.

2. "Carefully consider prudent changes" to strengthen the program.

3. Do not reduce guaranteed benefits or increase the budget deficit.

4. Reject any proposal that diverts money to fund private accounts.

The resolution will be discussed by the board's Executive Committee on June 6. If approved there, it would go to the full County Board at its June 15 meeting.

"My 8,500 people elected me to be their leader, and if I don't do things like this, I'm not getting that message to them on how their concerns should be addressed," Krueger said. Krueger spoke to reporters on the same day President Bush was in Milwaukee to talk about his Social Security proposals. "I thought it only appropriate that being elected to a leadership role, I take on a leadership role," Krueger said.
