City to decide on red light zone
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/4207391.stm

It's about Liverpool deciding whether to have "Tolerance Zones" for prostitution...

I think they should have brothels - it'd make it safer for the women, as they could bar people who are abusive to them & stop Pimps taking advantage of them

3. OK, I guess it's better than not, but surely ...

4. update: agreed overwhelmingly by the council
"The vice-friendly blueprint will be based on the Dutch model used in Utrecht, only operating at night and situated in an industrial area of the inner city, away from homes and night-time businesses.

The site would also have CCTV cameras and premises to be used as a health and welfare centre."
...
A Home Office spokesman said: "We raised the question of managed zones in our consultation paper on prostitution, called Paying the Price.

"We are looking into the pros and cons of such zones, but it would require primary legislation to make them legal."

5. I hear what they say ...
... but this still smacks of sanctioning something very ugly.

6. I remember Sheffield City Council trying something like this
And if I remember rightly it did not work.

I hope that they have actually asked people living and working in that area if they want prostitution tolerated like that but you do wonder if that has really happened. They showed the vote in Liverpool Council on the news last night and they didn't even bother to go to a show of hands!

7. Brothels
they have them in Victoria, just on the model you mentioned, but there is still a large street prostitution scene, mainly because the brothels won't accept people who are addicted to drugs.
