Will Hutton to be "fair pay advisor"
I just saw this as a splash on News 24. Will Hutton will advise the government on fair pay in the civil service. The highest paid civil servant to be paid no more than 20 times the lowest paid worker.

1. One good thing; but even 20 times more is rather a lot.

2. The gap in civil service pay is much much wider than 20 times.
Especially in the DWP and Department of Health.

3. Do you have examples ?
A salary of an Administrative Assistant (the lowest grade) is about £13,000 per annum.

A multiple of 20 gives a maximum in the region of £260,000

Phil Pavitt who is head of HMRC IT section on a 3 year contract was engaged at about £180,000 a year.

I think he earns more than the department head Leslie Strathie.

The suggested ceiling is no where near low enough.

Internationally German and Japanese CEOs have run successful enterprises where their pay differentials were as low as 5-10 times average salaries

http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/pay-lavishly-and-risk-being-shortchanged-20091011-gs9q.html

The performance rarely justifies the pay.
