Any places that treat people of color better than America?
I think I've had enough--sadly, I don't have a lot of hope for this place, and don't have a lot of fight left.

Anybody got good recommendations? Dh and I are an interracial couple--just sick, sick, sick and the events of this week haven't given me great confidence in America as far as race relations, women's rights, etc. are concerned.

I'm truly saddened this day.

17. I've heard wonderful things about the anti-discrimination laws
of France. I wasn't sure about Italy. Met a total asshole (excuse my language) here who was Italian--from Italy. He treated me like trash. I was told he wasn't indicative of the country...for the country's sake I hope not.

This guy was a real piece of work...beyond words...

We've have 8th and 9th generation African-Canadians.

The Underground Railroad led to Canada and freedom.

Our new Governor General, and the Governor General represents our nation,is a black Haitian-Canadian woman.

Married to a white Frenchman.

11. Really?! That's fantastic! Where can I find out more about
Canada?

I took French in highschool, but I don't recall much now. I know I could pick it up again, with work. I love studying languages.

Sorry to blather on--I'm just kind of excited by this...let me know if there are any Canada websites, history, etc. I could find more info out on. What is the job industry like? My husband is a printer. He prints magazines like Time, Newsweek, etc. ...

Thank you!

9. look up... look waaaay up....

Here in Canada, we have just appointed a black woman to be our next head of state. (Michaelle Jean)

Oh yeah, she & her husband are also an interracial couple.

Just like our current Governor-General & her husband. (Asian-Canadian Adrienne Clarkson & John Ralston Saul)

Canada, you may recall, had prohibited slavery from day one, and indeed, it was the destination of the "underground railraod". At the time, I believe they called it "the promised land."

Not that racism doesn't exist here, but it sure has a lot of hurdles to contend with.

So you probably wouldn't feel too uncomfortable here.

Oh, hope you don't mind that same-sex marriage is legal here too.

10. Don't toss the whole USA based on the South
There are some places in America that are very eclectic racially.
Hawaii and California for example.
I have experience as an Asian married to a mixed Black/Asian with Hawaii, California and Alaska. No problems. Sure wouldn't even think of moving to Texas or Alabama though.

Thanks for the encouragement. It's just really disheartening and dispicable. Beyond that actually--there are no words...

24. Honolulu
Currently in the great state of Hawaii.
We are at risk for hurricanes and tsunami here too but our government is waaaaay more prepared for disaster should it strike. We even have a Republican (shudder) governor (lady too) who is well liked in a very Democratic State. Very eclectic population. Quite friendly no matter your race. Gays and Lesbians treated as the normal folks they are and mixed marriages are the norm. Even treat the white folks well. ;^)
Hang in there. Parts of the USA suck. But parts are still paradise.

25. Thanks--dh and I hope to visit Hawaii in the not so distant
future...

Is there an island that one should definitely visit (besides Honolulu of course--lol)?

I had a conversation with a woman once, and she insisted that one of the islands gets rain pretty much year round, which made her vacation there pretty miserable. (She's a miserable person though--so I'm sure if it had been sunny, she would have found a way to be upset about that...:eyes:)

Just thought I would check with someone in the know...

22. Nobody is perfect...
But humane would help. I don't even see America as humane right now. It's as if the civil rights movement, the women's movement--none of it happened...none of it.

I'm not looking for paradise or perfection--just humanity, respect, decency.
