After years of careful and astute, but unscientific, observations of the right wing since Iran-Contra, I was wrong. Until then, everything I had begun to formulate about what they were up to was on target. I searched endlessly until I found others who had also figured them out or who had special experience or knowledge and I would proceed to the next mystery, often having a whole pocket full of them to figure out.
I was convinced that the true, hard core base of their voters was only about 37%. I felt that they could increase their numbers this time around because of their effective campaign to terrorize some of us, but it would be offset by all the Republicans who suggested we not vote for these people - such as former Republican Governor Elmer Anderson of Minnesota who wrote an eloquent and pointed column that became typical of reasoned and solemn endorsements of Kerry by editors and former Republicans. I was convinced that every gun lover and abortion hater who could vote, did vote in 2000, plus normal Republicans.
Taking that adjustment and adding all the new voters - we could confidently assume that the numbers were there - even in amounts to offset theft.
Reading between all the columns, polls, forums, opinions, testimonies, signs, marches, activities, organizations, internet inundation, money raising - it seemed about to happen - a win with numbers big enough to offset theft.
That's what happens when you're swung at from behind with Rovian & Co. Values.
