Touch Screen Voting Flawed
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05047/458149.stm

This is a good article, written by a local reporter. Mercer County had major problems in the presidential election.

It's great to see that the Pittsburgh Post Gazette is still on this.

"Until 2 p.m. yesterday, Jack Gerbel's demonstration of his UniLect touch screen voting system was going smoothly. Then, suddenly, the screen froze up, upresponsive to numerous finger-pokes from Gerbel and a bystander.

"It's worked fine up to this point," Gerbel said, faintly flustered, fiddling with wires.
<snip>

Back in 2000, when folks in Florida were fretting about the unreliatility of paper and punch-card ballots, UniLect and Gerbel, the company president, became overnight darlings.

But last year's presidential election marked a reversal of fortunes for the California-based company. Thanks to the Mercer undervote and a programming error that wiped out 7,000 votes in Carteret County, N.C., election observers are wondering if computerized ballots are any more reliable than paper ones."

1. Machine that ate 4,500 NC votes fails test in PA
This machine ate about 4,500 votes in Carteret County, NC and also caused a 10% undervote rate in Burke County NC.

The Unilect machines have now proven themselves defective in front of witnesses, even though there was no paper ballot.

5. Another good quote from the article:
"That bad coding, along with some other alleged instances of computer malfunctions and Election Day bumbling, led to a presidential undervote of greater than 7 percent last November. It also led to the resignation of James Bennington, the county's election and registration director."

3. Being one of the lost votes in Carteret County,
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 09:50 PM by rodriguez94
First of all I am thrilled to see continued media coverage...God knows the Carteret News Rag won't keep it going.

Secondly, I am curious as to where they got their number...7000 is significantly more than 4438 or 4400 or 3000 votes that were lost....

4. I don't know, but you could e-mail the reporter.
btoland@post-gazette.com

The Post Gazette has also really stayed on Santorum's case. They did a lot of articles on the cyber-school rip-off of PA taxpayers.

This is really a good newspaper.
