No, my rep is Sandy Levin. I live in the surburbs -- Conyers' district is in Detroit proper. Sandy's good, too, but not as visible as Conyers. He really rocks!

Yeah, he really, really rocks! I believe that wihout him to keep hope for justice alive, there would have been far more violence and riots around this country.

He and his courageous colleagues are real heros at a time when we need heros desperately. And oh, is he perfect for the role!

199. Yes, it gives hope to so many. The neocons have tried to demonize
so many things, not just the ones explicitly on their agenda, but also honesty, hope, community support, common humanity, decency, tolerance. Just go down the most prized humanitarian virtures, and they're all against them.

But I believe the tide is starting to turn. Doesn't the bible say, "by their fruits you shall know them"? Well, it's harvest time and the fruit's all rotten.

I can't even begin to express my heartache over this. These kind of decisions are hard enough for families to make. Now everybody is going to be terrified about removing feeding tubes... and it's a painless and humane way to let someone go.

170. Believe it or not, Tweety said something I agree with.
He said, "perhaps this is one case where it would have been best to have them vote anonymously. Let them vote their conscience, rather than pandering to politics."

Sometimes, even Tweety gets it right.

I wonder what they'll do next if and when this judge says Michael Schiavo
has the right to remove Terry's feeding tube. The Federal Supreme Court already said it wouldn't take the case. I believe even Scalia thinks it should be up to the judges in the state. Jeb Blivet's interventions have already been declared unconstitutional. Since when does Congress get to legislate after the courts have ruled on the laws. Are they making shit up as they go along or what? And has everyone seen the leaked Republican talking points (posted on ABCnews.com according to Randi Rhodes) that clearly state that this is just a political maneuver to get Senator Nelson (D) voted out of office in 2006. Don't know why they've bothered dragging the family through all of this, they just need to rig the voting machines again to accomplish removing Dems from their Senate seats.

And the story about the little baby in Texas whose Mama didn't have the money so the hospital pulled the plug without her permission. How does all of that add up with the 'culture of life' people? The hypocrisy is beyond the beyond FUBAR.:grr: :nuke: :smoke:

I was exhausted this morning -- It's not often I stay up that late, but I really wanted to hear what the reps had to say and to see the vote. I'm a wonk, too, when I can be. I switched during commercials during Boston Legal, but watched it all from 11 until it was over.

Said he adjourned it -- without a decision. Big cajones. :)

Really, since Dan Abrams came running down the steps of the SCOUTS with BvG in his hand, he lost all credibility with me. I've said it before, but he just reminds me so much of Miles in Murphy Brown. :)

It was so long ago now, I had a hard time. The acronyms just stump me sometimes.

According to MSNBC after Keith's show, they still haven't heard anything. I hope the judge rules the right way. If not, it's going to be such a travesty.

Go Keith go!!!

33. my email that I sent to Tweety and cc'd
to Keith last night when I was so mad listening to the whole thing

hardball@msnbc.com
countdown@msnbc.com
Where were all these politicians when baby Sun’s mother begged them to save his life? When is the media going to point out the hypocrisy of the state killing a baby using a law President Bush signed while fighting against a grown woman’s wishes and the sanctity of marriage to keep her alive against their wishes? Passing an unconstitutional bill that President Bush will sign that contradicts his Texas state bill. I guess a 5 month old baby is not worth as much as an adult woman that had an eating disorder that put her in this situation. C

I doubt I was the only one to email but feeling like at least he reads or a staffer does.

69. I don't think the police have to TELL you - but the info has to be
available to the public and can be accessed online (although, Mr. Lunsford doesn't strike me as a 'net guy).
I used to do stories about once every six months about where sex offenders lived so the public would know. I was nice that way - but most newspapers don't do that. They should - it was very well received, read and appreciated. Nothing like customer service to drum up sales - even in newspaper work.

Mr. Cooey - or however you spell his name - never registered and the police never tracked him down and violated his parole for NOT registering.
That makes more sense.

Oh - and they cannot be rehabilitated. I think child molesters should be beaten by the kids' parents. Sorry - that's the "mommy" in me coming out because I would kill anyone who harmed my child.

219. I have been there Clark and it is NO fun
My daughter was molested when she was 7 by my ex's girlfriends son. He was 6. (I know, but it did happen) I was ridiculed for months by him and by others in the neighborhood (they live in the same small town) because the boy was denying it. I got so tired of hearing "That's just what kids do" by those that had no real idea what had happened. After much wrangling with DSS, they finally told the mother that they would jail her if they didn't allow them access to the boy to investigate. Seems the boy was being molested by a 9 year old in his neighborhood. He did confess to what he had done along with naming the next boy too. Funny, I never heard one apology from anyone and certainly never a "thank you" from the boys mother, since my outrage lead to his disclosure. I couldn't press charges because he was 6 and the law says you can't until they are 7.

And yes, my ex still lives there and still wants the kids to "be friends". My daughter had a year of therapy while the boy got only 6 weeks of therapy. They were in a hurry to "put it behind them".

Do I think he will do it again? You bet I do. My daughter is now 12 and rather immature and I blame a great deal of that on what she has gone through with all this.

Kill him? You betcha I had those feels.

And my ex? She told him as soon as it happened and he blew it off. It wasn't until she came home and told me that anyone listened to her. I think he was more concerned with causing trouble with the girlfriend than protecting his own daughter.

But don't get me started on his shortcomings ... I could keep you here all night with that!

74. Good evening wonderful KOEBers. Our "Mission NOT Accomplished Day"...
....needs help.

Will Pitt is writing an essay supporting the endeavor. That will enable us to get many individuals and organizations to consider being supportive.

The original DU page is:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=3292082

What Will needs is a web page, separate from DU, that he can reference in his essay that will persist. Essentially a web page that contains the text that we are going to post in DU Activism (sfexpat2000 has written a draft and puebloknot is reviewing it), and perhaps additional information. I have no means of creating or hosting such a web presence. Can any of you help?

It might be worthwhile to create "missionnotaccomplished.org" and I would pay whomever did that the registration fee.

For even considering this, let me offer all of you more than one

:loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya:

Peace.

Right after the Nov 2 farce, if I'm not mistaken he had the domain but needed the tech help. Maybe your forces could join?

143. Hi UL! Buying a domain name is easy if it isn't already taken.
and if the word with the .org suffix is gone, there's still .net, .com, and .us. Some of the domain sites have software for building web sites, but I don't know anything about that myself.

But there are so many people out there that know all about this. The trick is to find the right connections. There are a number of other progressive activist sites, perhaps one of them might have practical skills and the time to give?

I know I do. When their local, state, and federally elected officials refuse to help them, they hear hate every where... they learn their life has no value. If they feel their life has no value how can they put a value on anyone else's.

their life has value. A kind word, an I care. I'm sure you know how easy it is. Just us regular people have to do what we can to counteract the message the govt. and hate media is sending these days. Sometimes all it take is a hi and a smile. So it can be done.

226. I agree. Kindness is AT LEAST as contagious as hate
Because it feels so glorious to both sides, and then it inspires more kindness.

Hate gives no real pleasure and certainly no joy. It is dead and hopeless, a last resort for hollowed-out people.

If we didn't have truthspeakers like Conyers and Boxer and their colleagues in politics and the few honest journalists that are left, I believe there would be widespread rioting. They help keep the fight for justice alive and also the hope that there are still things worth fighting for.

that Conyers provides, there would have been widespread riots and more shootings than there have been. When people are far down and believe they have nothing to lose, that's when the worst horrors are born of frustration.

But he's a living reminder that there IS hope and that the fight is worth carrying on. He carries himself with courage and pride and provides the best possible example. I can only guess how many people are alive today because of that.

Those back to back stories about those two little girls and the monsters who killed them are more than I could take.

I checked out the website in Florida that lists known sex offenders and their addresses just before I brought my kids down there last year. Found two within blocks of our house. It gives me chills. Those poor families. The nightmare to end all nightmares.

pedophiles some kind of drug that would work as a temporary 'castration' agent, in other words get rid of the urge entirely in those individuals without actually doing it surgically of course. Sounds like a plan to me. Probably not fool proof resolution to the problem though.

My neighborhood in Florida is quite a small beach community. Scary as all get out to have such people living so close.:scared: I can't even let my little ones outside alone to chase salamanders. It's a troubled world we live in that's for sure, although predators existed when I was a child too, I was almost kidnapped by one.

193. terribly difficult to manage though
It would have to be treated as a daily visit situation, not unlike a methadone clinic. You would have to track these men every day and make sure that they showed up and actually ingested their daily doses.

These guys are looking for the thrill of the control over someone else. The sexual preditor portion is just one element of it, it's the power of life and death that drives them. Same for men that rape adult women, most of them are not driven by the sex act but merely act it out as a release after the fact. There are, to be fair, a measurable number that need that stimulation to be able to perform sexually, but among rapists, that is not the majority I don't think. If you look at the stats, often rapists (especially serial rapists) are married with outwardly appearing normal lives. That's what amazes everyone about those that do it repeatedly over the years. Not unlike the BTK dude.

161. Can you imagine the language and visuals if they still had
douche ads on tv? Remember those ads? "Fresh as a summers breeze" indeed!

198. That reminds me of .........
......

The Summer House on Gull Bay.

Sydnie always liked the cupola ever since her teen years. When emotions
and personal problems were swirling around her she would go there and
smoke her "Virginia Slims" and read saucy novels about the rich and powerful
and their little bedroom games. But now with it being fixed up with new
windows, the oak wood work stripped, sanded, and finished this was her
own castle was again. The round bed and the chair by the window
filled it quite nicely. It was her room alone. She thought about
calling off her appointment that eve because she wanted to keep the
place "pure" but her estrogen was strong and the red merlot had taken the
edge off.

A voice called from the foot of the stairs ..... "It is me Keith. Are you
or are you not decent?"

I slipped in both eve & summer ...... :puke:

By the end of the summer, you just might have a good book written if you keep that up. (did I just say that pun out loud?) I look forward to tomorrows "words of inspiration"!

on this one. I thought for sure it would be a Repub, but I agree with it no matter who starts the ball rolling. My husband and I are both getting really sick of these ads on all the time.

thing! So good to have a spokesperson on TV who still tells the truth. Would be much harder to keep hoping without that. We are not silenced! And the neocon-nazis' heartless, shameless hypocrisy in the Schiavo case is not going to give them the benefits they thought they bought with it.

I am so very pleased about his honesty and outrage tonight. His watchers might not be convinced by the facts alone, but when they see his honest anger, that can move them to suspicion at last. Then once they begin to ask questions and open their eyes, the lies and horror are out there plain to see.

Well, on that note, I think I'll finally relax enough for a Guinness! We now are well-supplied! ;)

227. I was home today with a cold
and I kept switching channels to see what the coverage was like. No one else had the courage to even touch the idea that politics was behind this. Notice how the same people who cry "state's rights" now want the feds involved in a private matter.

Wait for it, this is the first salvo in the fight to over turn Roe v Wade. The whole "right to life" thing. I can read these people like a book, that is their main agenda. They don't give a damn about Terri one way or the other. She gives them an excuse to get started on an "all life is sacred" kick.x(

228. I've been saying that all day in various threads here. You can tell by the
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 10:44 PM by Nothing Without Hope
talking-point language: "protecting an innocent life," "right to life," ad nauseam. (Actually, not ad nauseam, it's already arrived.) The short term goal was to frame themselves as saving an innocent young woman's life from the menace of her killer husband. (Part of the plan was to bait the Dems into fighting them so they could be framed as killers too, but that didn't pan out.) The longer-term goal is to set up a sequence of legal confrontations and incrementally creeping legal language to culminate with the overthrow of reproductive rights. I have no doubt at all.

The good news is that Keith and the WaPo have now both publically exposed the hypocrisy for what it is, with the story of the Texas law signed by Bush in 1999. The text of that law is all over the internet for anyone to read, and the WaPo is not so easily ignored. Traditionally, the American people have disliked hypocrisy and fraud, though it sometimes took a long time to detect it. But maybe this will start some questions at last. The polls show clearly that the great majority believe that Congress should not have intervened. Now the Texas pull-the-plug-if-they-can't-pay law will be out there too. It's damning in my opinion.

Real disgust is hard for a politician to overcome once they've earned it. I also think they made a mistake in having the Cockroach Man come out with such an attempt at a saintly halo on this issue. He is corrupt and almost everyone knows it. Did you see this cartoon that I posted upthread? Bush & DeLay aren't in it, but it makes the point pretty clearly. These images and the stories about the Texas law are oing to make a difference, I believe.

Edited to add:

Get Well, Sparky!

I hope the cold is gone tomorrow.

230. Oh no. That, along with the Hate Amendment, has been their biggest plum
for their rabid RW fundie allies. There were short-term gains to be made in the Schiavo case, but the long-term plan is OBVIOUSLY to attack reproductive rights. There's no other thing that could get them so sanctimoniously exercised.

Oh, and please refresh my post so you can see my get-well wishes - I can't believe I got so overwroght at the politics that I forgot that! Spring colds are such a bummer.
