------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

There was always much talk about the FOBs (Friends of Bill)...
But what about the FOGs...
President Bush is adding a helper to his Social Security road tour: House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who is facing allegations of ethical improprieties but is seen by the White House as crucial to pushing Bush's plans through Congress. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5966983 /

Meanwhile, this is out: Jeff Gannon visited the White House 196 times in two years. Democratic Reps. Louise Slaughter of New York and John Conyers of Michigan filed a freedom of information request and were given Secret Service records of Guckert's visits to the White House. No word yet on whether this conservative wanna-be met with the President. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7634651 /

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist ruled out Tuesday a possible deal with Democrats on confirming some of President Bush's judicial nominees whom they'd blocked last year, in return for other nominees being withdrawn. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7640262 /

American special forces were tracking Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head of Al-Qaida in Iraq, near the town of Ramadi two months ago, but the Jordanian-born terrorist leader escaped by jumping out of a moving vehicle, a senior U.S. military source tells NBC News. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7637153 /

A group backed by the U.S. food and restaurant industries Monday launched an advertising campaign aimed at dismissing as hype concerns about the large number of obese Americans. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7633701 /

Wendy's finger suspect faces extradition. Nevada woman at center of alleged hoax due back in court.

And... EVER WONDER what happens to items confiscated by the TSA during airport screening? MUCH of it winds up on EBAY.
Monica Novotny reports.

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
A herd of buffalo somehow got loose and wandered around an upscale neighborhood in Pikesville, Maryland, disrupting traffic and alarming homeowners before officers managed to corral them in a tennis court. More than a dozen police cars and a police helicopter were used to herd the roughly 10 beasts, authorities said. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/R/ROAMING_BUFFALO?...

More:
The Federal Air Marshal Service is set to begin hiring for the first time since the agency ramped up dramatically in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, MSNBC.com has learned. The hiring announcement could come as soon as next week and would add badly needed new recruits to a rank-and-file membership that has been steadily declining. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7634360 /

A former Wall Street trader who rejoined the Marines after the Sept. 11 attacks is now faced with the consequences of another choice - the split-second decision he made in a combat zone. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7640703 /

Surrendering to international pressure and Lebanese street protests, Syria ended its 29-year military presence in its smaller neighbor on Tuesday with a farewell ceremony near their shared border, where a Syrian commander told Lebanese troops: "Brothers in arms, so long." The soldiers responded, "So long." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7636415 /

A man who got a new liver by advertising on billboards has died eight months after a transplant. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7640146 /

It's a choice that could give pause to some Green Bay Packers fans. A judge ordered a woman convicted of theft to decide whether to spend 90 days in jail or donate her family's Packers tickets next season to charity. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/P/PACKERS_OR_JAIL?...

Dad always said that UCC stands for "utterly confused Christians." But in seminary, I heard it was "Unitarians considering Christ." :)

The white alb is in the tradition of the ancient Church, where newly baptized catechumens were dressed in white robes (they were baptized nekkid, believe it or not!). Kinda leaves a lot to the imagination, doesn't it? :D

Serious questions still remain unanswered to Conyers and Slaughter, so as long as the story gets talked about, it's good.

52. Hi, Hope!
It did and he mentioned Raw Story reported on the number of passes Jeff/Jim received and that it was the all time record. Dana Milbank from the Washington Post agreed. KO mentioned that this part of the story had been ignored with the focus on hotmilitarystuds and all.

He also just reported that there were no WMD in Iraq before the war, and that there was no evidence that some WMD were moved to Syria. And a Dick Cheney dig, also, although I've since forgotten it. He ended that story with, "Oops!" :)

Go KO: :loveya:

312. actually I can believe they might NOT pay attention to exits IF
the day passes are also magnetic, like Dana's AND the guard sees JG drop it in the box. Two problems with this: I'm not sure they are magnetic (anybody here know for sure? my personal experience with Federal buildings in the DC area was that day visitors got a "Halt! Thou shalt not pass!" treatment at the front desk, but the visitor pass you got upon providing appropriate ID was not electronic and they damn sure got 'em back off of you at the end of your visit) and that doesn't explain the unlogged ENTRANCES. Oops, and there's a third thing: I saw, either on a thread here or over at dailykos, that someone had been analyzing the entries and had come up with an instance where the same day pass number had been used on more than one day. How did that happen, if the badge got turned back in?

Granted, these anomalies make up a tiny percentage of JG's visits, which raises another question: why is someone with a day pass spending so much more time at the WH than regular reporters with hard passes? Why did he receive such favored treatment, something the WH has denied? I mean we know it was to sell their bullshit, but it might be nice if someone mentioned that again. This nobody with no credentials got unprecedented access to shill for the WH. Can somebody please care about this for more than two seconds?

Would be a bummer to have him credit the wrong source. I knew he's a big enough man to credit the "lowly" internet for a major story, but I wanted to be sure he knew where it came from. I also emphasized in my email that I think the sex angle, while important, may be only a side issue compared with what else is going on with this guy.

Did he really say "briefings...or de'briefings"? Sounds like him!

But, nearly 100 is a long life. I'm sure she was tired - my Gran'ma was just a few months shy of 80. She SAID she was tired. I guess after four strokes, she was. She was a smart woman trapped in a body that would no longer let her talk properly. It had to have been horrible.

I feel bad, though, because I was going to go see her today. I'd been so busy with Ramzey and looking for work and Blue's sudden illness and death - is there ever enough time. I hope she knows I love her.

Condolences on your loss, too.

It's been rough around the KOEB for a spell.

Luckily we all have each other. :)

214. My Grammy said the same thing, that she was so tired.
She stopped eating or drinking just a couple of days before I got there. She was very weak the day I saw her, and in a lot of pain, but she knew me. She whispered my name and squeezed my hand. It meant the world to me to be there for that. I feel so bad that I wasn't able to get down there sooner, although I was there in August for her big 99th birthday bash.

Losing a beloved pet at the same time must be just excruciating. There is a great book called 'The Loss of a Pet' that helped me alot when my baby Moose died after 20 years with us (handsome black cat with big green eyes, not a real moose). If you'd like I'll send it to you. It helped my kids through it too. Animals give such unconditional love, it's such heartache when they can't live as long a life as we can, they are so important to our lives. Getting another animal helps but it takes time before you can do that. Now we have a little gray cat named Dusty Springfield that has stolen our hearts again.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of your interviews. You've been through so much, you need some good news.

the fantastic new bar and digs. And I suspect there will be a lot of people in the Elections 04 Forum who will be relieved to see us and our humongous threads go. Though they're really been nice about it - we're going because we think it's a good thing to do. They haven't been pestering us to go or anything like that.

OK, I just read the posts in the Group, and it sounds like we're moving
on the 29th. I supposed I assumed it would be the following Monday, since it seems a lot cleaner that way somehow than moving on the last day of a week. But i don't really care one way or the other and will find this thread wherever it may be.

We'll have to post headsups in ERD4 for a while, at least a week I think. I'd also like to see a headsup kept kicked in GD-P for a day or two to let people know of the move. More people read GD-P listings than ERD4 listings.

Sorry for the confusion, WG.

Partridge Family song a few weeks ago. Next week there's supposed to be an ABC expose about how Idol is fixed. Someone on DU said that Drudge is reporting it (if he says so it must be true). Without my Nadia I've lost most of my interest. I think top three will be Constantine, Bo, and Vonzelle (not necessarily in that order).

The rib is much better thank you. I had a lot of fun injuring it in the first place however, so it was worth it.

There's a funny one of Will Pitt kissing Matcom - lots of silliness going on, a good time despite the rain. Will had people from the meetup over at his nearby appt too, which was really neighborly (as we say in Texas) of him.

94. Hi. Hope
Things are OK. My visit to the neurologist was fairly inconclusive, other than "peripheral neuropathy" (of my feet). But the lab tech had to dig around to find a vein, and I'm bruised and sore!

Other than that, things are good. Roo has been snuggling with me since I got home. He wants his baby food - but he'll have to wait until Keith's done.

104. Oh, my... I hadn't heard about your poor feet
I knew about Roo and your family illnesses, but not your feet. Feet are so easily underestimated until they fail - then we learn the hard way. If the neurologists can't find anything, you might consider consulting a good acupuncturist and asking if your symptoms might be expected to respond. Pardon me if you've already done this or think it's inappropriate. I've had good results and have heard many firsthand stories and seen clinical trial results that suggest it is comething to think about. Don't know about your feet specifically, but there are a lot of acupuncture points there.

Glad Roo is feeling well enough to cuddle and give hints for his special food.

They've been bugging me for about a year. Doctor sent me for a "conductivity test" (where they shoot electricity through you to see if your nerves are working - yikes!). The neurologist was a follow-up, with blood tests to rule out stuff. His overall comment was "it's really a sign of aging, but it could be related to diabetes."

(Yeah. That was helpful. :eyes:)

135. Good grief. Well, I can tell you THIS from my own experience
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 08:07 PM by Nothing Without Hope
My first acupuncture appt, she took a long time going through my health history as well as my current symptoms. Part of the history - not something I was asking for help on - was poor circulation in my hands and feet. (In addition to perennially cold feet, I have Reynaud's Syndrome in my fingers - they suddenly turn white in cold weather. Not dangerous but an annoyance to have to stop and get the circulation going again.)

She looked at the part about the poor circulation in hands and feet and said "Well I can do something about that." And she did, that very day. I was so amazed to find that my hands and feet were WARM - I had to take my gloves off! And they STAYED warm until some months later when I became ill with a bad flu/cold and got all chilly again. So she revved up my hands and feet again the next time I saw her.

Don't know what's happening with your hands and feet, but if circulation is part of it, then from my own experience acupuncture can help.

Done with the lecture. Hope you'll excuse it. I want you to be WELL.

Her response was "I'm all in favor of exploring alternate therapies, if you like. But let's get a diagnosis first."

205. In Japanese style acupuncture the needles are more shallow than in
Chinese style. I always enjoy and am relaxed by my treatments. One way or another, I hope you get better soon. Frustrating not to know what's wrong, makes it hard to know what to do next or what to expect. Somehow, an illness is in a way easier to "control" psychologically if you have an official name for it. Look at what the chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers went through for so long, with people thinkng they were hyserical malingerers.

I've had those stinking conductivity tests several times, even in my feet. You'll be glad to know that a researcher is trying to develop a painless EMG. About time I say!

And my shins ached for a week. Ugh. Not as "painless" as they'd like you to believe. I was rather queasy the next day, too. I wish I had someone to drive me (but they said, no, you'll be fine...).

Nice to see ya, Gogi! :hi:

Back in the sixties when the game first came out and had actual pictures of the guys in it rather than drawings, this particular sister thought the Dud was the cutest one. She *wanted* to get him.

Unfortunately this tells a great deal about what her love life has been like ever since.

233. You know, half the fun of Countdown is the subtle humor in the graphics
I'm surprised no one has yet commented on how the DeLay story about the blivet supporting him was accompanied by a graphic of the White House and a super title that looked exactly like the title of the TV show "Friends."

Hysterical!

Anyone remember the last time he was taking about how one of Saddam's sons (I believe it was Uday) tried to stage a coup not long before they were both killed? The graphic on that one said "UDAY'S OUP-CAY." (Not only funny, but a great reference back to his original reportage that they were "ead-day.")

Of course, I get a kick out of each one that shows DeLay surrounded by roaches and calls him "The Exterminator." Or is that "The Ex-Terminator"?

Oh, and I remember another time when they were doing some baseball story, can't remember what it was about, and had a lot of baseball-related graphics, one of which was a baseball card. Guess whose. LOL!

224. Hello to everyone and drive by here.
Gizmo was rushed back to the vets today because he started crying again only a wheezy crying and one leg wasn't working again. He is fine now, got another antibiotic and a pain med since he seemed "uncomfortable". He is resting now but had to stop and buy a front pack carrier because he now acts like he is unable to breathe when in the normal carrier. The lil shit has figured out how to scare the human and uses it to his advatage. Though I think he figured out that scareing me too much gets him back to the vet, where he does not want to go anymore. He calmed down in the front pack even though it was on the same seat he was on in the other carrier. (not on the lap)

Got home in time for Keith so had him on while I tried to get the internet working again. Just finally have it up and running and have no idea how but it is working. I need to take care of the rest of the zoo crew then hit the bed after a shot or three of tequila.

Hope everyone has a good night and good day tomorrow.

237. OK, I just watched dzika's 4 min recording of Keith's "Gannon" coverage
which is here
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1746763

I thought Keith open to what is at the least the ODDNESS of the huge numbers of passes and the irregularities, but Dana Milbank of the Wash Post did everything he could to pooh-pooh it as something that is absolutely a non-story. The fact the "Gannon" was not even a journalist and was involved in a male "escort" service at the beginning of the time period was apparently not worth mentioning. I'm not happy with Dana Milbank, but Keith did OK. We'll see what happens now.

Milbank tried to make the lack of sign-in and sign-out just a typical glitch from ID card sliding, nothing to worry about. He's trying to bury this story.

261. When I read in today's newsletter that Keith would be covering the
"Gannon" WH visits story, I felt sure that his bosses would recieve a call from the WH demanding that the story be suppressed or downplayed in some way. I wonder whose idea it was to invite Milbank? I thought he really went over the top in trying to project "nothing here, move on, move on." I mean, at the very least this is a truly BIZARRE and UNIQUE situation, and Keith forced him to admit the latter at least.

I suspect Milbank's motives.

I LOVED the fact that the previous graphic, the photo of the White House with the letters

FRIENDS

written across the front was still up behind Keith while he was talking bout the mysterious and numerous visits of JimmyJeff. I wonder if that was his way of leaking what he really thinks about this - maybe not, but I like the thought.

I hope Milbank didn't succeed in his clear goal of squashing this story. He reminded me of Rosemary Woods leaning over an impossible distance to show how she could ACCIDENTALLY erase the Nixon tape whle her foot was on the pedal of her machine.

274. yes, you're right of course. I'll keep that in mind and try not to be
so angry at what Milbank did (which I feel sure was in response to orders to squash the story). These "third-rate burglary" stories are sort of hard to keep squashed, as you kindly reminded me.

So let's hope he didn't succeed in what he tried to do. I thought it was clear that Keith really didn't buy Milbank's studied nonchalance. He forced Milbank to admit that yes, it WAS unprecedented to get that many passes. That's something. And Keith's body language didn't seem to project the same nonchalance about the story that Milbank was working so hard to build.

That's my take. Well, we knew the WH wouldn't just let Keith blow up this story again without some kind of opposition. See what autorank says about what Milbank did tonight here:

289. Yes. Milbank came equipped - he used up about a minute with his
irrelevant story about how this wouldn't have happened under Clinton because they changed the access rules because of Carville ...blah blah blah. This seeminly endless digression left poor Keith to fall back on humor - "it's not about the hair, is it?"

For a network TV show, it was a very long time to spend on something that "doesn't have any content as a story." I don't think Keith was convinced, but that may be my fond regard for him speaking.

And I do have my suspicions about the "FRIENDS/White House" graphic that was left up behind Keith during at least the intro part of it.

Nice that he did credit Raw Story.

316. to be fair, Milbank did point out that Gannon had been
at many, many more briefings than Milbank had, which leaves a question mark dangling in the air as to why JG was there so friggin' much. IF Milbank was trying to bury the story in compliance with instructions from superiors, and I'm not convinced that was the case, he didn't do as whole-hearted a job of it as he might have done. If anything, he appears to have pointed to a weakness in the wall that may be less defensible. We could argue endlessly over security procedures, but there's no arguing that Gannon was there one hell of a lot, on day passes, and that such access would not have been permitted on day passes during the Clinton administration. Why have things changed, and who else are these changes accommodating? That's a question someone should ask Scott McClellan.

How many times have Keith's contacts been doing that to him lately? Like Irish cops--"move along, move along, nothin' here to see..."

I hope he doesn't take it all at face value every time. Of course, every time he thinks there's more to a story than meets the eye, he gets accused of being a tinfoil hat wearer, but hell, if that's what it takes, let's all buy stock in Reynolds Wrap.

267. Here's my suspicion of what happened with this coverage
Keith said he would cover Raw Story's breaking coverage of the "Gannon" WH visits/SS log story. Someone told the WH. The WH called and applied pressure. Keith was told to get Milbank (or one of a small number of "acceptable" people) who would come on and immunize against Keith looking like a tinfoilhatter. In fact, the real reason for bringing in Dana Milbank was to try to destroy the interest of the story. Keith forced him to admit that the number of passes was unprecedented, but otherwise it was a full-barrelled over-the-top effort by Milbank to bury this story again. Not Keith's fault; I think this was done behind his back and he had to deal with it. I think his guest had instructions and followed them.

That's the way I think this was played. Like I said somewhere else, I was reminded of that film of Rosemary Woods stretching impossibly to demonstrate how she "accidentally" erased those critical minutes of Nixon's tape while her foot was still on the pedal of her dictation machine.

271. I totally agree Hope. Just watched the clip. KO was trying to salvage
something of substance from the story to shine a light on. He does work for GE ultimately (I think that's who owns the NBC affiliates) and they will put the kabosh on any story that gets too uncomfortable for their corporate WH. That's why they give him toothless guests whenever he's dealing with a story that should undermine WH credibility. This President and his evil cohorts really are the Teflon Dons, nothing sticks to them (yet). This is why I think we should try to get more and more people to watch Countdown, KO is the only one (short of MacNeil Lehrer) that comes close to having a news program, even though it is of a different genre, news/entertainment, than PBS's newshour. If we can get him a huge following through word of mouth, that is the only way the network will let him do more of the kind of stories worthy of his snark.
Meanwhile the hypocrisy goes on and on and only Keith seems even remotely interested in exposing it. That's why we luff him.

272. Another possible scenario:
Keith's gonna carry the answers to an FOIA request by Conyers and Slaughter re: Gannon's access. First reported in Rawstory.

So they get one of the top tier journalists, Milbank, in to comment, and...

They spend 4 minutes talking about it. "Something weird here? Something creepy?"

"Nah, probably not. Weird. Or. Creepy"

"Yes, I'm sure there's a good explanation; I'm sure we'll hear it shortly."

"I mean remarkable? Sure, it's remarkable, but it's really probably not about...you know...that stuff."

"By that, you mean the gay escort and pornography stuff, that eclipsed the more serious story regarding access and security?"

"Yes, it's probably not about that stuff."

Best four minutes of TV I've seen in a while.

...don't miss the bump segment in which he plugs the "confiscated plane stuff on eBay and Pitt/Jolie" stories tonight. It's the best one yet, and one I really wish to have screen caps from.

First, the little thing he does with his pinky at the corner of his mouth when speaking of the alleged monetary value of the Pitt-Jolie photos; then the amusing faces he makes when talking about how everyone except him seems to think it's such a fascinating story.

And then he blatantly mouths, easily enough for anyone to lip-read--without actually speaking the words:

"I DON'T CARE!"

It's the greatest!

. . . Ashley was a quadriplegic who lived for a decade after his devastating car crash. He received excellent care from visiting nurses, thanks to a social program that has so far managed to dodge Republican budget-cutting axes.

Infuriatingly, Ashley died the same way Christopher Reeve did - from a bed sore infection that wasn't discovered in time, and stopped his heart.

. . . They never had children. Fortunately, my sister-in-law is very active in her church and sings, in add'n to working -- so she won't have much time to rattle around that empty house. I love her so much. She was my matron of honor and sang at my wedding.

She's handling it well (this wasn't entirely unexpected), but Ashley's daughter was quite distraught at the hospital. Her grandmother will be coming up from Texas for the funeral and maybe will stay a little after, so that should help her a lot.

Thankyou for the kind words.
:loveya:

Whirly, I've only just gotten to this part of the thread. So sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. Man, what a week!

308. Oh, Whirly, I don't know what to say
I came back in here today to see if anyone had left any interesting comments about the midnight replay, and found this.

What else can I say, except that I am so sorry.

Take care of yourself, friend. Prayers for you and your loved ones.

. . . I hope Ash will be the last loved one this awful April will claim.

What a sad month!

310. Was checking in on my way
out the door to work and saw this. I'm sorry for your loss Whirls, and will keep the whole family in prayers. Will keep you in my thoughts today and try to send strength your way.

Wasn't mercury suppose to move its ass and things get better? Wondering what stepped in then to lay so much on everyone. It needs to move already now.

319. Thank you, CC
. . . It's been sort of a tense week, with Ash in CCU (this was his second trip; they'd sent him home once and he didn't get better, so went back). When he failed to show improvement in the hospital I started to wonder if he was going to make it. As it worked out, he didn't.

Nevertheless, he beat the odds and lived longer than folks with his injury are "supposed to." So did Christpher Reeve -- which leads me to think maybe it's time for the experts to give those estimates another look.
