I left work half an hour early today. :) Not much, but at least I'm not working now.

But only until 11 pm. At least I will be home before midnight. A K&R for all of us doing the New Year's Eve shift.

12. I would give just about anything to be working somewhere tonight, & to have a family to come home to
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 09:38 PM by demodonkey

I will speak plainly. 2007 was not a happy year. In addition to the in-fighting that has just about tanked our election integrity movement, I personally lost my brother Paul to the barbaric health care system this past May.

Age 49, he died of two concurrent infections he got while stuck in a filthy nursing home for a broken shoulder because of insurance problems.

My mother, who is a stroke survivor and an incredible fighter for election integrity herself, is facing the same kind of thing even as I write this. Because of lack of decent long term care options, she had a small infection that led to a seizure on December 15. During the episode she broke her hip and that was undiagnosed for NINE days, until Christmas Eve.

I thought she was on her way to getting into a local long-term (25-30 days) acute care hospital that helps people with complex problems like her pain management. Met with the officer there today and she said they would like to take my mother if she is not SO doped-up in the next few days. But then, at 5:13 tonight (making for a happy New Years Eve, eh), a hospital social worker called and left a message that she wants me to pick 5 nursing homes that are "acceptable" to us because the hospital wants to push her out the door while she is still sedated, apparently due to insurance. A sedated person lying in ANY of the understaffed, uncaring nursing homes around here may as well just get a death sentence.

I don't know WHAT to do and I don't know WHAT is going to happen. I am all alone here fighting this and it is a mess.

As most of you know I've been fighting HARD for election integrity for the past three years with no pay, sleeping in cars sometimes so I can be in D.C. or my state capital, eating McDonalds $1 menu most of the time, etc. I'm a very strong person but losing everything I have including my family may be more than even I can take.

Especially when people may not see how fragile our democracy really is, how incredibly hard this system is going to be to change, and how and why we need every "baby step" we can get that is heading in the right direction.

I hope 2008 is better and that those who are around can recover some of the old unity and fire this place had in late 2004 and early 2005.

Best to you all from me.

14. oh, demodonkey
Hang in there.
My mom has been in the nursing home since May. I understand... one thing after another. Now, it seems they want to discharge her. They have not rehabilitated her at all, and she can not even stand up. But at least the underlying problem is better...
I'm pretty much on my own for her care, too. Medicare has a site you can check the rating of the nursing homes in your area.

Let's make 2008 a great year.
