Shatner mad about not going to Takei's wedding
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 07:53 AM by comtec
Source: BBC

Actor William Shatner has said he feels "nothing but pity" for his Star Trek co-star George Takei after failing to be invited to his wedding last month.

I know, I know, but really, we NEED some-thing to laugh about don't we?
The less-than-warm relations between the cast and their "captain" is hardly a public secret.
I admit I haven't looked at his video, but I felt this light hearted story might be a needed break from the rest of the unpleasant news of the day.
Oh yeah...

NO ON 8, NO ON HATE!

1. It's a wedding. Not a "gay wedding".

2. If I where George I wouldn't invite him either. From What I have heard
Shatner was a jacka$$ on the set and ego supreme after the fact.

Besides my wife has always said all those other actors in the cast carried Shatner.

17. His acting skills are Cartoonish and akin to those of Adam West from the batman series
But he was perfect in the first Star Trek tv series, IMHO.

24. Actually, I like William Shatner as an actor.
He was great in Star Trek. It's hard
to portray a monotonal hero and make
it work.. and he did.

Furthermore, I think his comedy skills
in Boston Legal are phenom.. just tour
de force.

In fact, I couldn't believe it was the
same Shatner for a while.

Let me also provide a comparison. I think
Hugh Laurie is horrible as House, just
awful. But he's a truly great satirical
comedian. He went backwards, whereas
Shatner went forwards.

25. I don't watch ANY regular network shows at all. Didn't like........
......Star Trek or Shatner, but that's just my opinion. I quit watching network TV way back in the 70's on any type of regular basis. Just watch certain cable TV news now and C Span, and certain movies. Matter of fact, I hate our TV with 45 minutes of commercials every hour (satire, I'm exaggerating). I like certain HBO "specials" and usually watch most HBO comedy specials.

27. The directing was poor in the third season, and made Shatner look bad
Is Boston Legal still on? I would watch for it if so.

6. He's angry about not being in the new Star Trek movie too
http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/10/william-shatner.html

Leonard Nimoy will be putting on his ears to play a wizened Spock in J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek, but don't expect a cameo by William Shatner as Captain Kirk. Last month, the 77-year-old actor posted a video on YouTube (see below), complaining about being left behind, and chastising Abrams, even though Shatner's Kirk died in Star Trek Generations (1994). "I brought him back to life in one of my books, very easily," Shatner tells Abrams in the video. "I'm just sorry that I'm not in your wonderful movie."

Abrams has seen the video, of course. "I don't know how my life has become a thing where William Shatner talks to me through YouTube," Abrams tells EW. "I was such a huge fan of his, but we wrote a scene for him in the movie and it didn't feel right. And he said to us—he said publicly—that doing a cameo didn't interest him. Which I totally appreciate. But we did try." EW tried to reach Shatner, but he declined to be interviewed. Through a spokesperson he said, "I don't think it would be appropriate for me to be involved in the Star Trek universe at this point."

8. Shatner is good on Boston Legal
His best role, I think. My question is, given this and everything else we've heard about him through the years, is his depiction of Denny Crane as an egomaniacal dementia patient acting, or just portraying himself?

9. I suspect the writers are rolling on the floor hysterically...
since they managed to write the only part that he can actually play and he doesn't get it.

If you ever see Shitner do his Grande Dame acting in "The Andersonville Trial" you will have a tough time watching even Denny Crane.

(And you will NEVER use Priceline)

Sorry, couldn't resist...

But seriously, congrats to George Takei. I think he should be able to enjoy he and his partner's special moments the way he sees fit!

10. I saw George Takei at a sci-fi convention in July
He was very excited about the wedding, and his fiance was there as well.

He mentioned that so many people approach them where ever they go to extend their congratulations.

He also mentioned that the wedding would be a very small affair, and that they would not have the space to invite everyone.

Oh well.

Judging by Shatner's comments, the wedding was better off without him. Prop 8 in California has now shifted to more oppose it than support it. My absentee vote is already in - No on 8 and voted for Obama!

23. Takei is usually at DragonCon....
And from what I've heard about the people who have met him, he is a great guy.

You do have to love the fact that the first interracial kiss on television was between a African American woman and a homosexual Asian man. God bless Gene Rodenberry, wherever you are.

33. Bzzt! Sorry...
Takei's great, and his role was ground-breaking in having an Asian officer in a mixed-race bridge crew, but to correct a factoid...

"The first interracial kiss on American network television was in the 'Star Trek' episode entitled 'Plato's Stepchildren,' which aired on November 22, 1968, when Captain Kirk (William Shatner) kissed Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols)."

Just becuase The Shat & Sulu dont get along doesnt mean we have to take sides- and what about the chain of command?

The Shat is still the best damn space captain there ever was- who else can save the galaxy, get laid and give over-blown, self-righteous speeches all within an hours time?

I can still sit down and watch half of those episodes. Roddenberry was great. That show had a real message of hope for our future.

Edit: "seven"

30. I agree 100%- except I saw them as re-runs in the 70's & 80's...
The space race as a national fascination was becoming a dim memory at that point- but still compelling and still a future to ponder...

I like pretty much all of the original episodes-The DVDS are pretty killer- the color & crispness has been restored and looks better than ever...

I don't care what they say about The Shat- he will always be a hero to me...

34. It's all about Bill
I've seen both of them at conventions. Both of them are very warm and gracious with the fans. But, with Shatner, it's all about him. George, Gods bless him, talks A LOT, and doesn't take too many questions because he tells a lot of stories. At the 40th Anniversary convention in Vegas, George and Nichelle got off on a very big anti-Bush rant. Poor Walter Koenig was just sitting there trying to get a word in edgewise!

I'd pay to see George again. But Shatner, no. He's an egotistical asshole.

36. ...because, after all, it *is* all about Bill. Welcome...
CUE STAR TREK THEME MUSIC:

EXT: Rolling green countryside, trees in far distance, fluffy white clouds on a bright blue sky.

BILL Shatner enters from left on a white horse, wearing a sparklingly polished suit of armor, sword held high in right hand.
BILL: I'm here! The Wedding can now begin! I bless this same-sex union!

CUT TO:

EXT: Wedding bower decorated with roses and lilies. Actor George Takei and partner Brad Altman stand together, a clergyman behind them, holding a leatherbound bible. At the sound of Bill Shatner's voice, all turn to look, and on seeing Bill, break out into huge smiles.

GEORGE: Bill is here! Bill is here! We are blessed!

END SCENE.

You have now just entered the movie in Mr. Shatner's mind. Please replace the 3-D Goggles on the stand to the left of the exit.
