Pope John Paul II
My mom would appreciate me giving a little nod to the Pope. He was in all honesty a great man and deserves the respect of all of us, I believe.

I hope there's a Heaven that he is in...although I may be in trouble, haha.

Regardless, you were quite a human, even without God.

3. I hope all of those who die of AIDS for lack of condoms
will reach out to him on the other side, as well as the thousands of babies born to starvation and suffering and early death because their mothers were forbidden contraception of any sort.

And I hope someday I get to tell him myself how I feel about locking the door on the idea of women ever joining the priesthood.

If this was a good pope, may the fates deliver us from a bad pope.

4. I have a question
Edited on Sun Apr-03-05 06:10 PM by silverlib
It is amazing to me that 99% of the people on DU promote peace, grace and harmony for our country and in our personal lives. This comes from many religious members of this board, as well as atheist and agnostics and those who choose different spiritual paths. I do know that religion certainly does not have a monopoly on morality. How is it that many of these same people can express hatred and disgust for anyone? I am so concerned about the right attacking integrity of people while they ignore the issues and yet time and time again on this board, in the last few days, I'm watching the left do the same thing to people who are ill and dying. Do you understand this? I do not. I have been guilty of very vengeful thoughts, but am trying to overcome this. Back in the eighties, I had an intruder break into my home and attack my sixteen year-old daughter. Fortunately, she was able to scream, fight and scare him away. I awoke to screams in the middle of the night and wondered who was screaming outside my apartment, not realizing, until I heard the door slam, that the screams were from my daughter's bedroom. I sent her to a friend's house and borrowed a gun. I sat in front of the front door all night the next night, hoping the intruder would return. He did not. I would have and could have blown him away. I knew to empty the gun and drag him inside if he was outside of the apartment when I killed him. I watched the Pope visit his attacker and forgive him. This taught me much. I am not a Pope supporter, even though the Pope was not a supporter of our current administration. I do not think he was evil. I do offer support to those who loved him. I do place a lot of responsibility for the overpopulation on the world in the hands of the Vatican. I do not see perfection in the man, but I do see an effort to do good. He admitted wrongs by the Catholic Church and offered apologies and healing, maybe not in all areas, but in more than ever offered previously. I just don't understand why we have to attack the integrity of an individual, any individual, and not stick with attacking the issues. I had my first post ever removed in the last few days. I suggested that someone use their ignore button and that I would use mine. Not appropriate. I took a break from any forum where I might find myself troubled for a day and your post, with responses, was the first that I read coming back. Do you wonder why people react this way? I do. Thanks for your post.

5. I agree with you whole-heartedly..
I twas a philosophy major and the idea of what 'good' is was a persistent theme. I have come to the conclusion that it cannot be expressed using language...perhaps it is intuition.

Regardless, it's like a Justice who described pornography as knowing it when you see it...and that's how I view this pope. I don't believe in God but he fit the bill of what a good person is to me.

Sorry that you've had a bit of trouble with the board...it's DU and can tend to be a bit extreme at times. Beauty of the board:) But yes, he was not perfect, no one is, but he was a damn good homo sapien in my book.
