Sixty years ago, a 13-year-old girl in Mississippi got pregnant.
Her family sent her to live with a relative in Los Angeles. Bewildered, she induced her own abortion. Police charged her with manslaughter.
On Monday night, the Rev. Carlton Veazey - president and CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice - recounted that story at the WV FREE Annual Choice Gala. The girl was his cousin.
"Many young people ... know nothing about what it was like prior to Roe vs. Wade," said Veazey, a Baptist minister and the event's keynote speaker.
WV FREE is a statewide coalition that supports abortion rights. Its yearly gala marks the 1973 Supreme Court decision that prevents states from outlawing abortion.
