1. Then, with respect to whether or not it is true, absolutely nothing changes.
As for the Catholic reaction, I would expect some would believe, some wouldn't, but most wouldn't care. A few people would ridicule the Pope. Big suprise there.

My guess is that most of them would not know, or care, what the hell he was talking about. You might want to read up on the concept of papal infallibility.
