At least I THINK that was the quote, in that documentary I just watched on the Sundance Channel.

This documentary is Italian and the title is Suddenly Last Winter.

Subject: the 2007 attempt to pass a law granting domestic-partner benefits in Italy.

It was like watching the coverage of Proposition 8, only worse. A giant tsunami of homophobia crashed down on Italy, much of it blatantly whipped up by a certain Tiny Fictitious State occupying part of Rome.

Though it was sort of funny hearing Vatican overlords whine that the domestic-partnership bill would eventually "legalize pedophilia."

You'll get a good, if baffling, introduction to the maze of Italian politics. But in the end, their politicians are just like ours. They dodge, bob and weave in front of the media and mostly communicate in platitudes and empty-speak.

The only rip-roaring, unequivocal endorsement of the bill came from a Parliamentarian speaking at a Gay Pride rally. She was from the Communist Party.

The film-makers are a couple of guys named Gustav and Luca, who have lived together for 8 years as a couple.

At one point during a night rally, they get into a squabble when one just wants to go home, and the other is getting into the face of some skin-headed Fascists. (It Italy, that means REAL Fascists - not Obama voters.)

Anyway, well worth watching. Otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it!
